Stage 2 transfer case

Hi everyone,

I just got a stage 2 transfer case from shep on my Evo 9. The after a long wait, I took the car and drove it slowly (was told not to drive fast for 1000 km) and noticed it is not as quite as the stock TC. It certainly doesnt whine. The other thing which made me worry is the chattering. It chatters when I turn the steering while parking or driving at low speeds. Is this normal?

LSD, mine does and I noticed it made less noise or less often after break in... not sure tho, I don't pay attention anymore.

What fluid are you runnig as well? If not wrong John Shep recommended to use stock fluid in TC.

I have emailed shep and he said that it is not normal and the car shouldn't chatter. Could it be the wheel bearing?

Ha, I didn't see the chatter part... does it chatter in bof directions? locking the wheel?

If something was wrong with the TC itself it will whine or chatter or make noise while going straight either low and high speed...

Are you sure it is not your twin or triple clutch making noise?

Who did the install? Was the C-clip on the intermediate shafts in good shape or could it have come off and dropped into the transfer case? I've seen some weird stuff happen. LOL

If it was a wheel bearing then the noise would temporarily go away when the wheel was turned. I just had my passenger front bearing replaced, so I would know. I really don't think it is a bearing or the clutch in the car. I would also check things with the install. The good news is that you don't have to really rip the car up too much to get the T-case back out.

I did the install at the dealer. they say it's from the TC which I highly doubt.

so you didn't ship your t-case over to him? You bought a rebuilt stage 2 transfer case straight from shep? did you buy a stage 2 transfer case from someone and just put it in the car? im trying to understand that part of it....

it doesn't sound like a wheel bearing issue - could of sounded like a exedy hd clutch but thats ruled out since he is on the stock clutch.

I'm thinking it has to be a steering related issue.. but the dealer says they did not touch anything close to the steering while installing the TC.

I highly doubt it it TC related, if the TC was bad it will whine or rattle everytimes, not only when turning. Something must be wrong with the shaft when turning and clocking or whatsoever related to steering.

Double check.
