Compression ratio and pressure:

If an engine has an 8.5:1 compression ratio, and you do a compression test, it reads to be about 170 psi or so.

Atmosphere pressure is 14.7 psi. The volume decreases 8.5 times the amount given initially. When you multiply 14.7 psi by 8.5, you're only getting 125 psi. Where did the extra 45 psi go?

You arent taking into account VE. At low rpm/cranking the runner length and cam sizing can increase or decrease what the math says it should be.
