Sorry to hear about that, as far as I know your the first, probably not the last though.
You weren't driving when it happened though, so you you really don't know for sure how hard or fast your buddy was trying to shift?
I have noticed with mine that somtimes when I try to shift it really fast, somthing in the shift linkage just binds up and it just does not want to go into gear. You can force it if you really try hard enough but.... I just slow my shifts down a little to avoid the problem.
I also saw somewhere in a new vendor site recently that they were selling steel shift forks for our car, to replace the stock aluminum ones. I will see if I can find it, unless some one on here knows the site off hand.

As far as going to the dealer, unless you know one that is really sympathetic to EVO owners, I would be very leary. Since you know what the problem is, maybe just talk to them up front, show them your car and see if they are willing to cover it under warranty. I would just hate to have them rack up a bunch of charges tearing it all apart, only to find out they are not going to cover it under warranty.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
