JE 85.5 Piston Rings Mix-UP

HI,
just wonder is there anyway of identifying the upper and lower of the JE piston rings?
As i bought it used so i dont has the manual...

upper rings are 1.0mm, lower rings are 1.2mm. they should only fit one way?

try putting the 2nd ring in the top ring land, you'll see what i mean...

That's correct. The top ring is usually 1.0mm tall and is steel (somewhat shiny), the darker cast iron ring is the 2nd ring. Another simple test if you're not sure, is to drop the ring onto a solid counter top from a few inches up. If it makes a "ding" noise, that's the steel top ring, if it doesn't make much noise is probably cast iron and the 2nd ring.
