New here, need help with rattling!!!

I just purchased 2003 evo 8 for a stupid good price because they couldn't figure out a rattling noise coming from somwhere around the tranny, I believe. When I engage the clutch the noise immediately goes away and when I let go it comes back. flywheel loose? pressure plate? clutch busted? The clutch is super heavy and engages nice.

If my tranny is blown, even with a rebuild I will still come out way ahead btw. it was THAT stupid of a deal. I can post a video when I get back from church dudes!

UPDATE 1: First transmission is compleley blown. Cannot even be rebuilt. It all locked up, gears are shot, bearings welded into case halves.

UPDATE 2: New "used" tranny was put in, same thing happened. Fortunately I made it home without locking up. Good news there?! Video update!

Transfer case? That wouldn't cause the rattling noise to go away when clutch is engaged would it? Is there a way to look inside where the flywheel or clutch without pulling the tranny out? Sorry for the noob question.

It's normal man. Don't think I have ever been in an EVO that doesn't do this. Clutch in and noise goes away.

Usually a lot louder with an aftermarket clutch. Search chatter on here

When mine was rattling it was the heat shield around the downpipe. Freakin' rust! I gotta say though it did it regardless of the clutch position there was like a sweet spot in the RPM range that if I hit it would rattle like crazy.

I'm not so sure this is what your issue is though I'd imagine if it was that easy of a fix they would have figured it out.

Ok I will look into the downpipe as well as the heatshield. I would like to replace the factory manifold with an equal length anyways. I had a hard time a few times throwing into reverse though so I'm still thinking clutch flywheel or pressure plate. Or reverse could just be effed.

It pretty loud even from inside the car. Anyways I checked some pipes and te heatshield, nothing. Although when the fan kicked on it got louder but I still think it's coming from the tranny. Gotta find out the noise is annoying and scary.

It's always been linked down to one of two things. TOB or input shaft bearing. It's completely normal and your stressing over nothing.

Likely the car has an aftermarket clutch in it which will amplify the noise even more. Live it, Love it or Leave it

Nope it was a problem dudes. I was driving along an all of a sudden I lost power like I hit the brakes then a loud screech and grinding noise then all four wheels locked and and I came to an abrupt halt. Scariest situation ever. It's getting towed as I type to my mechanic. Any ideas now? lol

It could be a number of things. Since you had no death wine it's probably not the TC, but you could have damaged it when you locked it up.

You're going to just have to pull out the tranny/tc and see what you find. My guess is the tranny.

WOW damn. I have been in a dozen evo's that have that bit of rattle or chattering at idle. Heck even stock cars bought new have had this issue after some miles where put on them.

Did the car feel like it was coming apart at idle? Were there vibrations felt in the cabin?

Either way GL getting her back together man and glad your safe

There was never any vibrations just some rattling that ended up sounding like grinding. It immediately halted my car that was scary. It got towed to the shop so I will fin out what the deal is tomorrow.
