So what's the benefit of the x diff over the 7? 7 diff same as 8 and 9?

I´m more interested in using it as a spare part since it´s harder to get 7/8/9 AYC difs.

The VII differential is an open differential and the VIII, IX and X are all planetary gearsets. The planetary gearset allows greater torque transfer from side to side. I am unsure if the VIII and IX are drop-in replacements for the VII, but the X has to have a modified left hand (driver's side for USDM cars) axle to work properly.

Saying the VII got a rear open diff will give the wrong idea. The VII got an AYC just like the USDM X. It´s way better than the USDM VIII or IX transmission.

The Evo VII with AYC DOES have an open rear differential. The clutches in the differential limit the power transmitted to one wheel and this transfer torque to the other wheel. The VIII, IX and X have a planetary differential combined with AYC, this is called SAYC. It allows for the transfer of torque wheel to wheel to be higher.

It would be extremely difficult to retrofit a SAYC differential into a USDM Evo. Not because it doesn't fit, but more because of the SAYC/ACD pump and electronics. To say it doesn't have an advantage is open to debate, I feel in our road racing application it is a big help!

We are having issues with bleeding it properly without the right MUT II cartridge. But our lead mechanic is pretty sure he can build a controller for the pump to test and bleed without the need of the MUT II system.

this is really interesting. There are a lot of different options that present themselves and believe it or not - a pump and controller are not that hard to integrate. look what the subaru guys do at dccdpro.com and we do similar stuff with the AWD GTR conversions. props to the OP, if didnt have a carbonetic LSD i would be experimenting with this (ie: use the evo X axles and go wide with the control arms)
