Rear Clunking Noise

I have been noticing a clunking noise the last couple of weeks that has been intermittent coming from the rear passenger side. At first I thought it was just my worned rotors which I was going to be replacing soon. However today while I was under the car I noticed the passenger side rear axle connection into the rear differential there is some noticeable fluid staining around the passenger side of the differential.

Is it probably just a loss of fluid causing this intermittent noise and how much would you estimate for it to get fixed?

I'm trying to rap my head around a worn rotor making a clunking noise. Ain't gonna happen. Did you bother to pull the fill plug on the diff when you saw the leak to check the level? Sure low fluid in the diff could be a BIG problem a new seal is only a few bucks and 1.5 hours labor. What you're hearing may be the brake pads shifting which is normal.

How are the pads shifting? The piston should be holding it against the rotor. Sounds like your passenger rear axle seal is leaking. If it is, the seal only cost $5.00 from mitsu. Can you post a picture?

I seems that some of the rear aftermarket pads are a little shorter than stock. So, back, brake, and the pads shift and make a noise. Go forward and brake and the same thing happens.

The pads on my car do this and I'm so used to it I don't hear it anymore.

What are you doing when you hear the noise, driving, turning, shifting, reverse? I have a "tin can cling sound" when I’m shifting, but if i time it right; i can make it not cling/click, 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, hardly ever going to 4th or 5th. Only makes it when i hold the clutch a bit too long... Maybe the drive shaft is lagging/lose, bad bushing. I don’t drive hard nor race, 95% stock. I don’t know if this helps or not.

^ This is important to know if you want any problem diag'd...and be honest if you were banging gears when you heard it.
