Standard Garrett GT3076R vs. Precision PTE 8530R

Hey guys thought i'd post this up as we just finished tuning one of our good friend's WW Evo 9 RS.

He was running a standard 3076r and wanted to upgrade and so we had initally wanted to test out the GTX3076R but due to time constraints he did not want to wait the length of time for it so we came up with another option for him and his set-up and i think he's very pleased

The great thing about this is that it was able to directly bolt right into his existing turbo kit's turbine housing but with the newer technology billet wheel as well as the ceramic DBB's!

Here's a little quote from a thread he started on our local forum:

Originally ordered a Garrett GTX3076R from Garrett and found them lagging on production, so I asked Sean of FFTEC what were my options. He came back with a smoking deal on a Precision 5830R Upgrade Kit for the GT3076R and it was no brain required. It was mine, and on top of that it came within a week and was installed yesterday by Dave W. at FFTEC. They were swamped with cars but squeezed me in as I was had the upgrade bug bad! So on to the fun, she gave me almost 50hp over my old setup and the torque pulls hard from 4500rpm into redline! Drumroll.........493whp/399tq and it still spools on the low end like a 30R!!!! I am extremely jacked up on the new torque and power, feels like a new car!! She's going to be a very nice Daily Driver with the occassional drag run just for ****z and giggles!! Thanks to all the guys at FFTEC they really know how to put a stupid smile on this old ugly mug!!! Oh, feel free to post up my Dyno numbers for me!! THANKS!!!!!!

MODLIST:

Cossie M2's, ARP Rodbolts and Headstuds, Supertech Springs/Retainers, Mynes Exhaust Manifold, JIC Exhaust, Intercooler, AEM Intake/Piping, Dual Walbro's, Bluemax 1450cc Inj., FFTEC Boost Solinoid Kit and Tephra Mod./E85 ECU Tuned by Sean Burgess of FFTEC.

Info about the new turbo can be found here:

The owner is not a drag specific kinda guy but likes to play with his Evo in all kinda ways from DD'ing to drag to track so his skills behind the wheel may not be the uber best but here is what the car did before on the 3076.

And now for the results (the is another graph with a bit higher peak HP number by a few but this is what i'm posting so you get the idea)

And here's what it looks, sounds, and feels like: (please click on image)

I'd say the 245/45/17 Hoosier Drag Radial base on the fact it's mounted on stock EVO VIII rim

Not quite Sal.

It's a Precision center w/ their newer ceramic bearings and their billet wheel.

30R size size turbine wheel

Thats interesting , you mentioned that you were able to use the GT3076Rs GT30 turbine housing so does this mean Precisions cartridge and turbine is interchangeable with the Garrett or was Garretts turbine housing modified (machined) to suit this new unit .

I think its significant that a lot of work goes into making hybrids based on Garretts and Mitsubishis OE turbines and sometimes they are modded too .
I think the issues are that people are trying to work around the shortcomings
of these turbines and particularly Garretts generally big trim ones .
I don't think it was an accident that HKSs GT7460R uses a 74mm compressor and a 60mm turbine , Garretts GT3076R is 76mm and 60mm . I don't have time now to look up the 7460Rs trim sizes or go into housing differences but I think is is significant that when you want torque and acceptable turbine response the trim sizes don't need to be big .
I suspect Garrett went down the big wheel trim road because they were looking for high gas flow rates in relation to the physical size of their aftermarket (read not OE on anything) GT BB turbochargers . It wasn't the case with their competition TR30R turbos which used either 69 or 76 trim turbines . The UHP series turbines in GT30 and GT35 turbos is 84 trim BTW ...

At the end of the day you can keep re inventing the wheel (compressor) but it you want it all the turbine has to be optimised too .

Hey that's my Kar!!! LOL!! This Precision 5830B kit gives my GT3076R some legs (TORQUE) for sure, gonna hit Infineon today for some testing runs to see how this power translates to the 1/4 mile ! I'm running my street tires so, it looks like just the mph I'll be looking at, as I expect to spin a lot!! Got to practice my 2-step anyway so this should be fun! Don't want to get kicked out right away so I may just do some practice runs! Wish me luck!! Later!

Ran 11.6@125 on street tires at Infineon's Weds. Grudge! Should be real close getting into the 10's with my HOOSIER DR's this Sunday at Sactown's North vs. South match!! Was sliding in 1st, 2nd and part of 3rd before she would hook up so the torque is amazing! Wish me luck guys!

Got 5 runs in at Sactown before I got my warning, managed two runs at 11.1@128mph before leaving. The extra 100 lbs of torque spins the tires in all of 1st and part of 2nd even with the HOOSIER DR's! Could not get a perfect run down without spinning or missing 4th gear, I know driver error!! LOL! Hey its only my second run this season, cut me some slack!! I know there's a high 10 second run in her and I may change the suspension in the rear because the JIC coilovers are way too stiff and may be causing me to spin too hard in 1st!!

Hey Vince keep practicing you're almost there buddy!

I know you're suspension is set-up for turning right now so i bet even a stock set-up would work better for your launch.

Also those couple things i mentioned on the other forum should net you that 10 sec slip you've been looking for

Here's a vid for ya i thought i'd post here
