My car + E85 = bad idea?

I live in a place where E85 isn't too hard to find but not much cheaper than regular fuel so I'm considering the switch for power only. Some recent block failure threads have me spooked though.

The car made 376 whp/345 wtq on CBRD's Mustang Dyno on a hot/muggy day on 93 octane. BBK Full so torque hits hard. Let's assume 10% more on dynojet so we're looking at roughly 380 wtq on a dynojet. I have since gone to a bigger/better intercooler core and will be swapping the o2 housing to one I believe will get me a bit more power.

With this in mind, I think a retune on 93 could get me to close to 400 wtq on a dynojet. E85 should put me considerably over 400 wtq on same dyno. I've heard English Racing and others say that 400 wtq is just about the most the stock block can comfortably take. So would E85 be pushing it? Power is nice but not at the expense of boom.

I have been over 400wtq for over 2 years now on e85. I think as long as the tune is good and you don't abuse your car you should be fine. Just let your car get up to temp. before you beat on it and stay up on the maintenance.

It also depends on your driving style. If you are likely to drive in high gears and really load up the turbo at lower rpm you are more likely to pop the motor.

I don't think you have much to worry about other than finding E85 stations. Just make sure that you get solid tune and keep a close eye on all of the cars vitals.

OP, what mods did you have when you made 376 with the BBK?

your tuner can keep the torque lower at pk tq by manipulating the timing map...

Yes! exactly what I did...i limit my E85 Street Tune to 380wtq ...Race Tune I go a little closer to 400 but still pretty cautious about it...If only I had a spare Engine laying around haha

BBK Full hits so damn hard, even on 93 octane I feel kind of the same way. You will want to limit torque and get a nice smooth curve to protect the bottom end. I know my torque curve is more like a torque wall, its almost vertical on 93.

If you have easy access to E85 I think its a no-brainer. If you don't go with a razor edge tune you will be safer overall. Pre-detonation is more likely to break the motor than excessive torque and E85 is amazing at preventing detonation.

Do it, I switched to E85 a month ago. You won't look back.

I just saw this one again. Wanted to add that on a mustang dyno with E85 your torque will very likely be in the neighborhood of 390-410. So don't sweat it. Just have a (literal) map of e85 stations in your car or map switching capability.

With a good tune, I think it should not be a problem, go for it.

4Rtech did you have Jestr re-tune for E85.
PM me with details when you get a chance.
Tired of paying $4.59 a gallon for 93...

I had Silver VIII @ No Limits when John came up here back in 11/2010.

Thanks
Mark

Thanks guys. The idea of having tuner limit torque down seems wasteful to me but I guess the top-end with E85 would still be worth it. And Boltz, I'm already working on that literal map of E85 stations.

Your not technically saving any money by switching to e85. Typically, you use 30-40% more fuel when running e85, so the cheaper cost is about the same as paying for the 93.

I have been playing with going back to pumpgas. I was a little dissapointed when U saw my car was getting 11mpgs on the e95. Now, I am not saying I am expecting the car to get 30+mpgs. Although fillin up once a week, just driving it to work and back(10 min trip) was getting old. After speaking to Devin(boostin Perf.) He told me that the 11mpgs are outragious and he can easily get me a little more driving on a full tank. I dont think I will be switchin back to pump now.

Then the question is, once I get it re-tuned from Devin. I dont know if I want to try and push the car a little more or not. My only reasoning,is the core charge on the evo blocks are so high, its not really worth it. But then again, there are so many people running mid 400 tq range on stock blocks, it makes you want to sooo bad lol.

The car now is at 431whp, 392 ft lbs. These numbers are from a Dyno Dynamics dyno, not sure how "real world" those numbers are. I would like to push to maybe 450whp, prolly around410 ft lbs I would think.

I shall find out soon!

I have been e85 for two years at 400 + tq and no problems but my car has low miles. Now im building my motor at 39000 miles before it blows.
