Timing Belt Movement - Normal?

Is it normal to have a little movement on the timing belt between the intake cam and the tensioner pulley when revving the motor?

It almost ripples for a split second like a motorcycle chain when revving it, then goes back to normal while keeping a steady rpm, then ripples again before going back to normal when idling. It doesn't move a lot but enough to make me a nervous.

Does any other evo have the same thing? Am I being over paranoid?

Also if it matters I have a gates racing timing belt. It also seems to have normal tension between the two cam gears and between the tensioner pulley and intake came.

Thanks guys!

Honestly I'm not sure but if I was too guess I would say it's on the loose side. and I see alot of people do not how to set the timing belt the RIGHT WAY....I have seen some adjust it perfect so the grenade pin goes in and out smoothly then buttoned it up, but you have to spin the engine over and wait like 10 mins to give the hydraulic tensioner to adjust. It has taken me a while to get the hang of it the first time to get it perfect but I'm also a perfectionist. If you dont do this then the belt WILL be too loose once the tensioner adjusts itself and can risk your valves smacking the pistons. Maybe not in your case but in general if it was too loose

The scary part is I see this bad way being done by "pros" and I just started with these engines and I know how to do it more properly than them....Another reason why I have no faith in people these days, and why I do all the work myself

But from what I remember I dont remember seeing ripples on my belt but not positive on that

I set the timing by getting the grenade pin perfect, turn motor over until timing marks line up, let set for a while, then it was still perfect. I did this a couple times just to be sure.

Anybody else have the same issue? Or is it normal?

Just pulled the top timing cover and seem like there was more movement than before.

Should I be worried?

so how much deflection do you see from the belt when you try and push on it between the sprockets?--- shouldn't have any, belt should be firm. If your seeing the scrockets move or your getting the belt to press down...its too loose.

sort of off topic, but how much deflection should the balance belt have? Should it be as tight as the timing belt or almost be loose to the point where it looks like you can slide it off?

It has more slack at one point of revolution then the other. I can't remember if its TDC or opposite.

That's normal. Too tight and you'll have other problems in the future, especially with that type of belt.

When I did my 60K I used a new tensioner and let the adjustment sit over night. When it was still okay in the morning I buttoned her up and never looked at the running belt. I mean, when the tensioner is good, and the tension is set correctly what else is there to do?

The belt is tighter at TDC.

mine is also like that... i thing its better that way.... dont want to much tension between the cams. I also checked that the gears were 100% on the marks and the belt had the play like that. I used a Cosworth belt.

i might have the same problem, and I was gonna post the question about it, but I'll just read the future posts.
BTW do you hear "rattling" noise after 4k rpm? Mine almost sound like catalytic cover is loose and its rattling, but I dont have a cat nor any covers.
