AEM Series 1 VS series 2

Just a quick question, I’m looking at buying an AEM EMS. You can usually find a series 1 with sensors for around the 1K mark, were as a series 2 is 1800+…..is the series 2 worth the extra cash? I know they fixed some of the small issues with the series one, like the start up…etc but I wouldn’t mind saving a bit of cash if the series 2 is only marginally better.

Just looking for some opinions.

Thanks,

From my experience, AEM seems to care more about the Supra and Honda than they do about the Evo. The series 2 supposed to be released more than 2 yrs ago. All that tells me is that AEM have a group of incompetent engineers. So to answer your question; If you're forced to pick between series 1 and 2, pick 1 but there are better ECU's out there. I would never buy or suggest an AEM ECU. Halltech and PRO EFI.

I think the aem is a fantastic product. It really just takes some time and attentenion to detail. If you are going to tune yourself get on the aem forums and read. If you are going to have a shop tune your car, make sure they have done lots of AEM EMS's before. Also also on the forums to ensure they are good at what they do.

With that being said, I would stick to a series 1. I picked up mine for like 550 bucks, and I already had all my sensors from a previous build. The other item that will help get quicker starts is a Triggerdisc. However it is not required.

The only advantage to a Series 2 is more logging storage and a USB connection. You can use the AEM Tuner software on a series 1.

We just went 8.75 @167 mph on series 1 without even one hicup. I would say it works.

Emery, I don't think anyone implied that it doesn't work. There are just better ECU's and better companies than AEM. That's all I suggested.

^^ i'll agree there might be better EMS's out there, but most tuners know AEM and since i'm not close to a dyno i have to stick to what ppl know up here....and thats AEM.

Anyway, i believe i'm going to try to find a used Series 1....there really seems to be no REAL advantage to go with the S2 as of right now.

The Series 1 occasionally had hardware/firmware issues, like losing cam sensor signals. The Series II is much better built than the Series 1, but AEM has not got the software flawless.

For the used price of $500-600 for the Series 1 now, it seems like a very reasonable step up from the OEM ECU, if that is what you're looking for...
