low compression.......
Went to the track last weekend, the best run I got was a 13.1@107 with 1.8 60 foot. My best has only been a 12.3@115. Being pissed, I did a boost leak test, found one hose completely disconnected behind the intake and one dry rotted and split down the middle. Took it out and logged 4 3rd gear pulls and threw the numbers into the virtual dyno: 319whp/276lbtq. I went to CBRD 10/16/09 and made 401/352. No change since then besides a shep racing transfer case and transmission.
Compression test: passenger-driver side. Engine was warm, 5 revolutions per cycle:
130/105/150/120
cap of oil in each: 165/140/170/160
Conclusion:worn piston rings or cylinder wall damage.
I just ordered a leakdown test and will post those results once complete.
With this low compression, can that be repaired or would I need to buy a used short block? Never messed this deep into the engine so not sure what's needed. Thanks in advance. If needed, I can post my log up in the morning when I get off work. This is on a IX.

it depends on how badly the walls are damaged. usually you can bore it out .020 over though and get .020 rings. However you could think of this as a blessing and use it as an excuse to build your motor. slightly off topic ive always wondered but never checked if using thicker oil would give you better compression. anyone got any insight on this or have tried it??
I wouldn't go the .20 over rings. I have seen blocks that still had cross hatching in them and the rings worn after 100k miles. If you do take it down that far I would at least check everything and just freshen it up. Rings, bearings, gaskets, and seals would make it like brand new.
I guess it might help compression but don't know.
