Diff popping and clicking on turns under power

I know this is a shotty first post asking you guys for help, but please help a fellow EVO owner out.

Short backstory:
I just bought my first Evolution a mint condition 2006 Evolution 9 with a decent odometer reading. It runs like a top and just beautiful inside and out. I bought it from a dealership at a huge discount because the rear end clicked on turns. They told me that the previous owner had told them he had modded the rear end and they believed it to be an aftermarket LSD because of the clicking, I also believe/hope this to be true because i have driven cars with LSD's that click and drag around corners under acceleration. Another reason I believe them is because when i got under the car the entire rear end looks like it has been cleaned very recently not a speck of dirt to be found. I have done my research and found tons of possibilities from: the diff possibly not having OEM diff fluid, to the diff needing friction modifier, and also needing new spider gears.

now let me tell you EXACTLY what the diff is doing...

The diff clicks and pops during any kind of turning under acceleration, doesn't matter what gear or how much power is applied. It does not make ANY noises when going straight or in reverse. Also the noise is hardcore loud, it turns heads outside the car when it is making the noise. The car has no other problems everything else is perfect.

now does that sound like an aftermarket LSD?
If it is an aftermarket LSD can it be quieted?
If it is not an aftermarket LSD, what could the problem be?

ANY help is appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

sounds like it has a modded diff. That noise you hear is the plates locking. Either after market altogether or a stock one that was modded by TRE or Shep. Easy test...... take a turn and gun it. do you get sideways lol ???

any way to get rid of the sound, short of putting an OEM diff back in?

You could take the back cover off to look inside and see if its been modified

You can get the preload decreased, the higher the preload the stronger the locking effect is. Friction modifier could help but it sounds like its pretty tight and it might not get it where you want it.

sounds like a cusco diff. we used to get comments from people that the car sounded broken, as if we couldn't hear it ourselves.

Put some stock diaqueen in it.

lol this is why mitsubishi assembles the rear lsd incorrectly from the factory

check out what rear diff it is - i'm sure there are a TON of people who will be willing to swap their oem rear diff with you

If it is just a clicking/popping noise but the car handles fine when cornering then it is most likely either a modified or aftermarket diff.

Thanks for the input everyone! Anyone interested in trading me for an OEM diff call me a pansy, but this is my DD and it really isn't practical with this diff in it.

Yep, sounds like aftermarket rear diff or stock reassmbled correctly. I don't blame you wanting to ditch it. If it's a DD, you don't want extra noises, discomfort or things you put up with that go along with Evos used in motorsports.
