my clutch reviews
hi after just getting my car back ive realized that i have now had 4 types of clutches in my evo, so i figured i would give my opinions on them.
first up is the stocker. i ran it for 60k with nothing realy done to my car but the usual boltons. i actualy still have it in storage. when i made the decision to go on the extreme side of building my evo i replaced it before it went bad and while i had the engine apart. very good clutch for stock like power.
when i decided to upgrade my clutch i wasnt sure of the power i would end up with after building my engine. i didnt think a multi plate clutch was worth while and looked into my best bet single disc. i ended up with the ACT 6 puck sprung hub with HDXS pressure plate. this clutch had the hardest pedal pressure of all the clutches ive run. i was making 420hp with this clutch and i drove it daily. not a bad clutch for DD but ur left leg will get bigger than the right. i had nothing but lockout issues with it though when i would take spirited drives. i ended up getting every shift bushing replaced to no avail. i had 9k on this clutch when i decided to take it to the strip for the first time. after a horrible launch and making it 25ft before loosing all power i knew it wasnt good. after tearing the trans off i saw that the clutxh had fused itself to the flywheel.
after talking to ppl and searching the forum i decided that it was time for a twin disc. i got a quartermaster and raised my power level to 540hp over the next 12k miles. this cluth was alot to get use to. i liked the fact that i could rebuild it fairly cheap or so i thought. one day driving home i was unable to downshift into anything until i was stopped. limped home and trailored it to cbrd. they took it apart and found that all the slines on both disc hubs had broken off and then broke my transmission input shaft splines as well. after dealing with QM for a month they gave me a random reason that made no sense saying that i caused this, then gave me the " u should try our new and improved version". i told them to shove it and give me back what remains of my clutch. my advice to anyone running the first version is to take it out asap before ur trans needs a rebuild.
last, i hope, is a clutch that i went with after talking with chad at cbrd. hes driven many setups and recomended the carbonetics twin disc. so after finding a good price i was offered an even better price for a tripple plate carbonetics. so i bought it and cbrd installed it. so far i have 40 miles on it but cannot believe hiw awesome this setup is. this is truly stock pedal feel with almost no chatter (once i get some miles it will get louder im sure). the difference between it and the QM is night and day. the qm was always a chore to drive and knowone who drove my car could stand it but me. i delt with it because i figured thats how all multi discs had to b. i was wrong and to anyone looking for a multi plate clutch look no further than Carbonetics.
