Seating front axles?

How close does the axle lip need to be to the transmission/transfer case? Don't know if I'm just weak and not muscling it hard enough but I can't seem to get it all the way flush. The black seals are slightly showing, are those supposed to be covered?

Thanks in advance...

I can take pics if needed...

this is what you should see, providing the shields are still on the axle ends
