Exclamation Turbo cool down...

I just vey recently found these amazing forums, and you guys are awesome with all of the insight you have already passed on to me. So in that vein...

After reading the thread about breaking in your motor right (I just followed the manual - but I wish I knew about using different oil ahead of time), I'm looking to take as good of care as I can of my Evo.

In reading another post by Shiv of Vishnu, he said most drivers that have an Evo won't pay attention to letting the turbo cool off after driving hard, I wanted to know what a good length of time to wait before shutting off the car is? I don't have a turbo timer (yet), so what should I do to be kind to the car? Or am I worrying over nothing?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Keith W.

P.S. - First post here, and first tuner car, so try to not be too harsh!

Not to be rude, but there's a whole turbo-timer -vs- cool-down thread.. The gist is if you drive hard.. drive easy the last mile or so, then let the car idle for 20-30 seconds and your ok.. all you want to do is allow the turbine to spin down a little before you shut the engine down so its not spinning for too long after you shut off the engine (So it has adequate oil while its spinning to a stop), the easy drive will allow the turbo to cool off a bit, but for the most part, normal driving really only needs a few seconds of slow driving and idling (which is more or less the time it takes to park in your driveway or pull into a parking lot and park)

MalibuJack - Thanks. No offense taken. Like I said, I am very new so I don't really know where to look. I'll do a better search next time!

I have an Hks unit which is set to auto time. Depends on how high you take the rpms. Ussually mine goes for 1 1/2 to 2 min's . In cold weather I like to start my car and take the key out an let the car warm up for 5 min's Not remote start but I dont have to worry about my car going down the street.

I also have a turbo timer Blitz DTT and let it go for about 2 minutes on average unless I get into some sprited driving then let the auto timer go to work. And oh yeah it is nice to let it warm up first too.

I have mine set to a min, but going to work I don't even get into boost and pulling into my house my garage is behind the house so I have to pull around and that takes about 30 seconds plus 30 seconds getting to my house = a min.

Your bean is better, and less hassle (with alarm, and what not) than a turbo timer. Give yourself a half-mile to mile of non boost (less than 3000rpm) of cool down...only if you've been seeing WOT and 6500RPM+ runs. Stick to Mobil 1. Watch and learn how much heat you see (in daytime...a little hard to see at night off your hood after various runs. The very hardest on a turbo and cooling system is after sustained freeway running...like doing 65-100+ runs, or going to WOT like 3 or 4 times in a row. Use your intercooler sprayer...works major magic on keeping things cool. Your engine is just a heat pump for the turbo...keep it cool and things work great.

I cool down anywhere from 1 to 3 minuted depending on how hard I drive. Like they said, just take it easy for the last few miles and you won't have to really worry about it.
