do i have an aftermarket rear diff?

hey guys i was just wondering if someone could help me out on how to check if i have and upgraded rear diff? i purchased a demodded car from a dealer that has a fullly built motor and i can tell that it was put back to stock due to soldered on stock fuel inj wires and what not. so im thinking the drive train might have bin done also and was going to start with my rear diff if not. but how do i check or what do i check for to see if the rear diff has bin upgraded?? because if it has obviously i can save myself money and move to something else on the car. thanks for any help fellas

take a turn and hit the throttle. If you rear end swings out theres a good chance its not stock.

this is why im thinking it might be possible because if the roads are wet i can pull out from an intersection and turn left or right and stuff my foot into it and about 4500 rpm the back swings right out there and you can pedal it and keep it sliding. once i pulled out on a rainy night and as soon as it hit full boost it swung out and kept going and before i knew it i was facing back the other direction . so im thinking it might be possible that i have one but i need to know how to verify to make sure.

I could do that on my stock unmodified diff in the rain so I wouldn't use that as a basis for confirmation of an upgraded rear diff. If you would have said you did that when the road is dry then that is a different story. Also you can tell if your diff has been upgraded or modified if it chatters on low speed turns.

It will be pretty hard to differentiate between a stock 8 plate and a modified 12 plate by just opening up the cover but if it did have an aftermarket diff we can help you figure it out. I have come to find that the chatter on even a modified 8 plate can be pretty noticeable and can only image a 12 plate to be louder. If you haven't noticed your diff making a lot of noise by now the chances of yours being stock is pretty high.

well i have noticed it when i put my solid mounts in i thought there was something wrong with my rear end because of the how loud it was just cruising down the road. so i changed the fluids but still the same and no metal flake in it so i havent worried to much about it. with the stock head unit in and my volume level at 25-29 i can still hear my rear over my music. and on 1hr long trips it gets quit annoying lol

That doesn't sound like your rear diff even though people say it whines a little after the bushing install. A modified rear diff makes banging noises.

when you say banging noises do you mean a clunk?? while turning or anytime? because i forgot to mention that sometimes when just puting around casualy if i dont let the clutch back out just perfect and slowly it clunks in the rear. most of the time its wen shifting into 4th or 5th. but i assummed it was because of the solid mounts. sorry i forgot i wanted to put that in my last post but forgot because im at work and just hurrying to check this thread on my break

FWIW, both of my Evos did/do this with the stock diff. Seeing how few modded diffs there are on the field, the odds of you having one are slim.
