valve seals? smoke..

car is smoking at idle after car is at operating temp, also after decelling in gear. the smoke isnt horrible but noticeable. if sitting wating for light to go from red to green itll smoke and then go away as soon as take off and drive. doesnt smoke while driving.

so my question is it the valve seals? if so can those be replaced with the head in the car or is this something i should have a machine shop fix?

any help is appreciated and info/how to would be great

Hmmm pcv valve?

You should always start with a compression check to make sure.

And I have heard that a cap full of auto tranny fluid may help swell the seals. Dom't quote me lol

pcv is removed for catch can setup and its a fresh buschur motor so compression shouldnt be a problem

Always good to check though

How new is this motor? How much boost/power you been putting through it? How many miles on the head?

Might just be the valves. Just make sure you rule out rings and gaskets too. I know you can change the springs without removing the head, just not so sure about seals.

i should also add im pretty sure its something in the head cuz it started to smoke like this on old motor setup and does the exact same thing on the new buschur setup and did right away. which is why im leaning towards something/seal in the head since that was the only thing left thats not new from old motor

I had just made a 100 mile trip on the highway in hot weather and then shutdown at a hamburger stand. Was there for about 20 minutes. When I started the engine there was a big cloud of smoke at the tail pipe that went away in about 20 seconds. That is what convinced me I needed valve seals. New seals fixed the problem.

And, yeah, you can do the job without removing the head. I did.

compress the cilynder with air compressor at around 70psi, with the piston siting at the bottom. That will keep all the valves up. Just have to get the compression testing air line.

Mine did the same thing it turned out to be the exhaust side valve seals. I did it with the head on the car just following the DIY for valve spring swap and changing the valve seals once the springs were off.

I bought a special spring compressor - don't remember the brand without digging it out. Pulled the cams and stuffed rags in all the drain back holes. If you don't do the latter you chance losing keepers. I then pulled the plugs and stuffed a cylinder with 1/4 inch rope followed by turning the piston up tight against the rope.

Other than that it was armstrong and piddling with the tiny keepers.

Edit: I haven't read the DIY. It is probably better than this.

I have done the valve stem seals multiple times in DSM's and in my Evo successfully. Your symptoms point to either that or a bad turbo.

^This is the tool you need. There is full write ups on how to remove the Timing Belt components/Cams to get to be able to do this step. I have dropped keepers in the motor and it sucks, definitely stuff some paper towel in there to prevent it. It is very important to take your time. Good luck!
