tranny: downshifting from 5th to 4th

Had the car for a while, but the other day I went to downshift from 5th to 4th and it made a grinding noise. It does not do it all the time but ever since that they every once in a while when I downshift to 4th it grinds the gear, or makes that noise.

what could this be and how can it be fixed.

is it only doing it in 4th gear? if so the synchronizer is probably getting worn out in that gear. requires a transmission rebuild to fix.

if you shift into 4th very slow does it still grind? if not that would confirm the syncro.

3/4 synchro is worn. Rev matching will help. Probably needs synchro, slider & maybe the gear.
