I am presuming that's going to be the next weakest link in the chain, but so far we haven't had any issues, regardless of power with the full built Shep/Quaife TC's.

Obviously some....VERY obvious cracking, and some very light, but all present.
but what you are seeing is a result of shaft flex. the distance between main bearings on these shafts is quite large. the shafts flex, gears break as a result. the shaft flexing also twists the bearing in the housing. thats why you see cracks there.

making the housing stronger will have no affect at reducing shaft flex from torque. the gear teeth are still going to break. and I 100% agree the case shattering is from the teeth being wedged between the gear sets, forcing them apart with enormous force

If 94AWDcoupe is right about it being shaft flex over case flex, then you would likely see some particular bearing surface wear in the outer and inner races that could lead you to that outcome. I would think you would see some out-of-round bearing support areas in the case and gear wear if it was case flex. Although, how round the bearing bores were to begin with is a big unknown.

I have no doubt that in some instances, shaft flex or case flex can be the culprit. But just as often, it is simply gear material strength or even fluid shear strength causing problems. You can make the shafts and case thick and they won't flex but it doesn't mean the teeth won't break and still manage to split the case after the fact.

It's been a while since I've had my trans off, but I do recall "spider web" like surface roughness, but it wasn't cracks. Have you polished the surfaces and seen if these micro-cracks are actually existant below the surface?

I am not saying this won’t fix the problem either. Just curious about the signs that lead you down the road of a $3000 bell housing. I’ve just seen numerous instances where splitting the case had absolutely nothing to do with the initial failure.

Cool idea/project.

Looking forward to final pictures and results

Looks pretty good. Was just at PRI and saw the Aussies built a full CNC trans as well. Price with all upgraded internals was somewhere around $20K. That's some serious loot. Hope it does the job. Good luck.

Trust me, we didn't re-engineer the part just because. It's literally flexing along the flange as well and out of rounding the bolt holes. Physically digitization of the cases shows a varying degree of all of these problems. The billet front portion is absolutely going to prevent most of the transmission failures we are seeing.

In the pictures I saw, it looks like the case that grenaded in insane speed's case looks like it failed from the thrust load, rather than from the shafts pushing apart. just throwing in my 2 cents.

Couldn't spring for the 5-axis eh?

I guess I'm spoiled.

Are you going to be testing the new case with dogbox gear sets?

I saw same pics and draw different conclusion. I have seen t-cases break the case with out hurting the ring and pinion. and others that sheared the cases and just barely hurt the tips of the teeth due to gear still spinning after the shear. that would be an example of the thrust load pushing cases apart. insanes broken case pics shows a ****tonne of broken gear teeth. if it was thrust load pushing cases apart there wouldnt be sheared teeth. how can a broken case break gear teeth? there is no longer any force holding the teeth together to break them...
I just dont see this billet case doing much to make the trans more reliable. and at the cost of four to five good trannies pretty much on the dumb side.
I have been building transmissions for 30 years now. I think my assessment is pretty accurate. draw your own conclusions I guess...

Finally! When Insane Speed notified me that this bell housing would be ready in December, I immediately ordered and payed for one. i will be testing this billet bell housing with my 5 speed dog gear set. Just waiting for Insane Speed to ship it to me.
When should I expect to receive my billet bell housing?

This billet bell housing will be mated to the "Crazy Spec" Insane Speed long block.

She should be cleaned up and ready to go either Friday or Monday.
