too much exhaust noise

Hey guys,
I am pretty new to this forum also to the evo , but not new to cars my last car was a 04 wrx with 380 whp.I bought the evo after my car was stolen in Oct 2011.
My problem is i bought a 2004 GSR evo 8 basically stock with just intake and a megan racing catback.I just dropped in a dp and test pipe now the car is pretty loud.If i use the stock muffler from the axle back would i loose the extra hp gained from installing the dp and tp?I was thinking of using the same 3" piping from the axle back with stock muffler.I would appreciate any suggestions and feedback thanks.

i wouldnt do that, youd bottle neck the exhaust flow, your best bet, to lower the exhaust noise, is what I did. Im running a full 3" tbe no cat, and to quiet down the exhaust noise, and get rid of some drone, is where the flange is after your cat or test pipe, in the long straight away, have 1 or 2 preforated style resonators welded into the straight away portion ( I used 2 18" long ones fit perfectly before the bend in the exhaust pipe to the muffler). That will restrict noise, without restricting flow. My car is still pretty loud at idle and wot, but at cruising in vacuum can barely hear it over my radio.

i am in this position to, my car was loud with boltons- with the 3inch downpipe test and greddy ti catback but bareable, ever since I added my 35r kit with t3 mani the car is 2x louder! its getting really anoying I need a exhaust to quiet it down but not lose restriction that turbo needs to breath. I bought a megan resonated test pipe, great quailty with this piece, but it hasnt made much of a difference. At this point im thinking of switching catbacks to something more mellow.

Mine also came with Megan catback and unsure of brand 3" dp. Way too loud for me. Previous owner didn't have the quiet insert for the muffler. I ended up going with Tanabe dp, Perrin hfc, and Tanabe Medallion Touring catback. Much happier. Particularly on the occasional few hour interstate ride. Even it though can be slightly intrusive on those longer road trips, and I still feel the need to not go wot if I don't want too much attention in certain areas. I actually soundproofed under the trunk carpet recently and I believe it may have helped a bit on those long drives. That Megan was terrible on the long drive home though (it's for sale!).

I hope the hfc will help you, but I wonder if it will be enough for your ears or not. Not too hard to put a layer of soundproofing in, I might end up doing some of the center tunnel too.

I'm removing test pipe and slapping in an Berk HFC tomorrow.
I'll report back on noise level. Tubular mani put the sound level beyond reasonable.

Lots of people have reported good luck reducing sound by running 2 mufflers. 1 in the cat position and one at the rear. It supposedly hardly reduces flow at all but makes a dramatic difference in the noise.

Just installed Berk HFC in place of Megan test pipe.
Initial impressions, definitely quieter cruising.
WOT hard to tell, seems a bit better. Raspyeness from Tubular mani makes things louder regardless.

On another note. Fit and finish on Berk is perfect. Nice welds, lined up perfectly.

I have 2 resonators on my exhaust with a magna flow exhaust and its quite( RRE STEALTH EXHAUST). Try looking into something like that setup. Putting your stock muffler back on would be pointless, you minus well go back to stock everything.

I put a BR mid muffler on my set up and its the perfect amount of noise. Its sorta Loud at WOT and thats it, normal driving your under the radar. Its a mid muffler and a bullet muffler on mine.
