Something about the Manley Billet Crank

MAP is assembling my 2.3 shortblock that is using the Manley Billet Crank. I was planning on using a set of Oliver 150mm rods from AMS. These rods use the bigger 6-bolt bearing. MAP called me the other day and informed me that the rods will not fit. It turns out that the big end of the rod will clear the crank counter weights, but they will not fit on the bearing surface. An OEM crank has pretty much a 90 degree angle where the bearing surface turns into the counter balances. With the Billet crank, the bearing surface makes a 45 degree angle before making another 45 degree angle into the weights. According to them, a rod that uses 7-bolt bearings is required. In my case, I went with the Manley TT labeled "stroker, lighter weight straight beam design." I haven't had the opportunity yet to actually verify this, but I figured I'd get this information out there before someone finds out the hard way. Trying to torque down a wrong spec wrong could be an expensive lesson.

I've always used OEM cranks in the past, so it was new to me. I assembled several 4G63s when I lived in Tulsa, but I don't have a machine shop I trust down here. I'm lucky I didn't come across this in my garage!

6 bolt BE bearings will only work with stock 7 bolt cranks (88mm or 100mm)
