4.11 final drive can't decide?!

I've done some reading on this but can't make a final decision on whether or not to change to a 4.11 final drive. I'm going evo 9 1st gear. I would really like a bit less rpm while cruising in 5th at like 70mph, but I don't really wanna sacrifice performance. What would you do? I should have around 400-450 hp this year and next year probably build it and go bigger... Like 500-600Hp with this power is the 4.11 the way to go for a daily spirited driver?

I´ve installed 4.0 FD from Tomioka Racing with my V RS gears (same as Evo 9 RS) and like it very much. I only have around 370 whp 360 wtq acording to VD. My car with me only weight around 2980 lbs, stock turbo.

You do loose some of the spikiness but broaden the powerband in each gear, used to only hit 20 - 21 psi in a first gear pull, now it reaches 22 - 23 psi because the car loads up earlier. Highway driving is a pleasure.

I love my 4.11. I have the Shep ultimate racing tranny w/ IX 1st and VIII 3/4/5th. I couldn't be happier and it is nice to save gas on the interstate too

It is the perfect drag tranny too!

^ I have the exact same setup. No issues at all. Check my vid, you can see I have no problems driving it. And 80mph on the highway nets me 3250rpms.

My tuner says u need "big power" to pull this gear. Which I know he is thinking strictly 1/4 mile, but it makes me not really wanna loose the torque of the shorter gears...... The tranny shipped yesterday so shep should be calling me tomorrow or the next day whenever they get it split open. I guess im just gonna stick with the stock FD......... Ill deal with some higher cruising R's I guess lol

I've been wondering this myself and for my needs that would be a perfect final.

I've got a 4.111 and a 4.529 sitting on a shelf and the 4.875 sitting in the car, i'm having a tough time trying to decide which one to use, i'm siding with the 4.529 at the mo as I don't need big speed for what the car is going to be used for.

You don´t loose any torque, if anything you actually gain more torque because the car loads up earlier in any gear. My car a weight to power ratio of 8 lbs / whp, so if you are at or above that I don´t think you´ll feel the car is hampered by the taller FD. It does smooth the power delivery but the car at the 1/4 mile will be faster, I went from 11.96 ET with 4.529FD to 11.73 ET with the 4.0FD (had maybe 22 additional whp as well, but temperatura was also higher).

Here´s a VD plot to show the ballpark of how my car reacted to the change.

you lose effective torque at the wheels because of the final drive ratio... Just like 3rd is less torque at the wheels than 2nd gear.

My bad, I should have said that you don´t/shouldn´t loose wtq and whp, it just shifts a little towards the left for any gear to gear comparison; but yes the car does feel a bit slower to accelerate at certain points because of the efective torque loss like you mention. Like I mentioned earlier, less peaky power/torque delivey, but overall ends up being faster if you have a minimum ideal weigth/power ratio.

Overall I enjoy the smoother power delivery, my car came initially with the 4.875 FD (JDM V RS) and it was just silly how fast the gear changes came up, then with more power I swithced to a 4.529FD and was much improved, the a little more power and gave the 4.0FD a shot, no regrets here and the car is still fun in autox too, just a little more tamed and not as raw a before.

For a more visual reference here is my 11.96 ET with the 4.529FD:

And here is my 11.73 ET with the 4.0FD

There is about 20 something more whp in the second run, but the launch in the slower time was better.

Cheers,

Ricardo

Dealers are not familiar with these part#'s but I trust they can trace them through inquiry with Mitsubishi Japan
