Help me with my drivetrain noise.

So I have been getting a random banging sound when I accelerate or take turns. I originally thought it was my rear diff that started making the noise as I rearranged the clutch plates and heard that was normal but the noise should only be apparent on turns not in a straight line. Now I can finally determine that it is coming from the front of the car but everything looks bolted up and nothing is loose. I am lost here, any recommendations? I know it is hard to diagnose without a video but basically if I drive straight I hear bang bang bang bang bang..........stops................drive a little more with nothing........bang bang bang bang.....stops. I notice on right turns it gets more apparent than left turns. I was thinking maybe axles but they seem fine. I autox a lot and after rebuilding my rear diff I put four events on my car until it started making noise. I have put three more on since the noise and the car held up. I just wish it would give out already so I can find out what part was wrong.

It sounds like a binding transfer case or bad CV joints on the axles. If you have some type of chassis ears or can borrow then, put them on the knuckles and on the transfer case. where the noise is louder, you can isolate where the problem is.

Whats the miles on your car? Last transfer case fluid change? what weight and brand fluid are you running?

The car has 43k miles on it. I just did a flush with Amsoil 3k-4k miles ago. The transmission is going in for repairs so it looks like I might send my transfer case in also to get looked at.

Ok. I forgot to ask if the axles were ever removed before or the t-case was removed.

I have seen where the axles are pulled and the CV can pop out if place. Sometimes the needle bearings come apart as well. When the CV pops out of place, certain loads or turning angles will cause it to make a popping noise. Make sure that both the axles move freely in and out. If it does not move, you need and axle.

I work for Ford, I know every Ford dealer has chassis ears if you know someone that works there.

It wouldnt hurt to get the t-case looked at but with the miles and fluid change, depending on the autox events, the t-case may have overheated.

My cousin is a service writer at ford and can definitely hook it up. I can't believe I didn't think of that. As far as the axles go my transmission was rebuilt 7k miles ago so at least one was removed. If that was the case I would have heard it then.

To add each time the bang occurs the car will sway slightly to the left or right

Since your trans was recently rebuilt, drain the fluid and check for metal debris. Both axles should have been removed.

Honestly, I have not hear of a bang noise and a pull at the same time. It does seem like an axle though.

If you can, check for a torn axle boot or grease.

I would recommended driving a whole lot until you find the source.

I have checked my axles multiple times now and everything looks fine. The car is on jackstands right now and I have been retorquing every bolt I see. The trans was rebuilt 7k miles ago but it has a lot of abused autox events on it. The trans is coming out again for a first gear rebuild. If the problem was in the transmission it would be very convenient. Something tells me I am not going to be so lucky. I am still waiting to get the chassis ears on my car so until that happens I can't say what is wrong with my car. I have also gone through all the gears while my car is up on jackstands and it doesn't make the noise.

Maybe motor mount? It is really hard to give you an idea...
How does it feel when you hear that noise?

You should check out local shop to find it out.

Motors mounts are fine and to add they aren't stock. I don't bring my car to shops. I am really handy and used to be a tech. The only thing I wont do is rebuild my transmission or transfercase.

If the axles are back in place, they still could have come apart. You would need to pull the boots off. Obviously I wouldnt take apart the axles until the trans a t-case are checked.

The car may need to have a load on it for it to make noise. Not just sitting still.

When you pull your trans, make sure that the alignment pin are installed. If you are missing a pin I suspect damage to the clutch and trans.

I wish i could hear the noise. If you can, get a video of it.

So I ended up buying a bottle of redline friction modifier and put that in my rear diff and to my surprise the noise went away. So attention to anyone that fills up with amsoil and has a modified rear diff your car will make a lot of chatter noise.

Amsoil will do the same with an untouched rear diff.
