Trouble with Timing

I know this is not EVO related but it is 4G63 Related and is driving me nuts.

I have a weird issue with my 90 talon that has been driving me nuts.

Basically the car hates lower timing. The stock timing map for my car runs 22-24 degrees of timing at 5,000 and 5500rpm.

I am trying to get timing down so I can raise boost more. It seems that the more timing that I take away from the car the more it hates it.

Taking timing away will physically remove any knock that I had. but at the same time will make the car studder like it was running too rich.

My current timing map starts at 6 degrees during spool up and from there ramps up to 10 up top.
I want to go lower than that but the car just refuses to let me do it.

What would cause an issue like this?
Should I let the timing be somewhat high during spool and then drop to 6 at peak and then carry on to top or start low during spool like I currently am?
