depends on the use of the car. if you want to granny it around town either/or will work fine. if you want massive power then the 5 speed is more reliable because of the thicker gears. for autox people tend to stick with the six speed.

Not if you're really trying to be competitive. The 6spd tops out 2nd way too soon. I was only hitting about 58mph on 285/30/18s before I hit the limiter. For autox a 5spd is ideal so you can get more revs out of 2nd gear. I swapped my 6 for a 5 about 6 months ago.

The 5-speed stands up to much more abuse - both stock and built. I won't use anything but a 5, especially in a car that is raced.

It is basically personal preference, I did not like any of the 5 speed Evos I've driven. I hated the way the cars shifted. But if you really abuse the transmission then I guess the 5 would be your best bet.

Thank you all. Actually I don't care what kind of transmission will be in the car. 5 or 6... I just want to buy a evo 9. I think 5 would be better for me.

I prefer the 5 speed. As mentioned before, second gear in the 6 tops out a little early. Also, its quite fragile. If you don't intend to ever attempt to launch the car, the six will probably be ok. Launching these cars can be hard on either tranny if you're new to it though (or if you make too many mistakes).

5 speed. 6 speeds are a very nice trans, and if you dont plan on making more then 380 ft/lbs of torque....then i would personally prefer it. I drove mine around with 400 / 400 and it lasted fine, did a ton of highway pulls and i had no issues with the trans....stock bottom end however....thats another storey lol.

What the hell you guys talking about 2nd gear topping out too quickly? There is barely any difference in 2nd gear ratio in the 5 speed (1.95) vs. 6 speed (1.944), which means the 6 speed has a higher MPH at redline.

Fragile? Not quite, I have at least 25-30 launches on mine
