ACD tuning remap - First drive mini review

My ACD control unit just arrived today. Plugged into the car and went for a drive.

Phenomenal. This is what the car needs. Every Evo needs this. Should be the first modification anybody does. The whole car feels much more tied together. Much better steering feel. The bad understeer in medium high speed sweepers is gone. No longer does the car have that Jekyll and Hyde quality of Japanese FWD econobox and hi limits supercar when you really push on it. It feels like a top level Euro sedan instead - think M series BMW E30 M3.

Very nice

Can't wait to try my TRE diff now ....

Are you currently on the stock rear diff? If so, plates re-arranged or not?

Yes, still on stock diff. TRE 12-plate is sitting in the garage waiting to be installed. Yes it is a custom street/autoX flash - one map - from Matt @ ACD-tuning. Flash was set up with TRE diff in mind - so I am probably not seeing the full potential yet.

Will report back once the modified diff is in.

This was fast road use as the Brits refer to it - on my favourite mountain road.

Interestingly enough my wife who was sitting in the passenger seat and who didn't know at the time that I had changed anything one the car noticed that the car felt different immediately and in a positive way, commenting that the car felt much more stable at speed.

I got a custom flash that Matt had used for another customer/sponsor car that had been successful autocrossing, eg FTD. Matt flashed my Tarmac map which affects the other maps slightly as well.

One of the things that really stands out is how much better the car steers - much more linear.

Matt chose that particular flash based on those instructions:

Car is set up as follows:

Robispec springs w/ stock Bilsteins
stock tire size (will remain that way)
Perrin PSRS w/ added caster
Whiteline RCK
spherical front bushing on front LCA
spherical rear trailing arm bushing
Whiteline rear bump steer kit
TRE 12 plate rear diff (not mounted yet; sitting in garage)

Mild tuning (turboback, ETS intercooler & piping, intake, reflashed ECU)

Other possible planned addition: H&R 25mm front sway bar

Car is used as daily driver (summers only) with very occasional track day. I live in the Pacific Northwest that has plenty of rain ...

Used to front engine rear wheel drive cars. Have road racing, tarmac rally and track experience, some gravel. I do not like Porsches for their underlying handling characteristics, nice as they are. Would like to be able to steer car on the throttle. Ideally car should be slightly understeering to neutral with light throttle and possible to use throttle to balance car in corner. Ideally, would like a fluid, responsive but stable chassis to be driven with minimal steering input, relaxed at speed, e.g. feels slower than it is actually going.

You said the flash alters all 3 setups in the ACD? I am very interested in the track setup, but I also drive my car through the winters too

You are still able to drive the car in the snow, even with the flash.

The GS flash only alters the AYC mapping and not any of the individual mode mapping- so it's not specific at all. Think of it as just altering the timing map and not adjusting boost, fuel, mivec, etc.

Are you sure that's what it does for the VIIIs/IXs? They don't have AYC so if that was what it did, it would be the equivalent of doing nothing.

The AYC maps have effects globally on the other 3 maps. I don't know exactly why they do it this way but I'm sure they have a reason for it.

So yes, a flash will effect all 3 maps even if you only change one setting.
