turbo going bad?

My engine is tore apart so I want to ensure my turbo doesn't need rebuilding or replacing while access is convenient. How can I determine

Its actually a really simple process. Just take the compressor wheel and move it side to side. There should be very little shaft play or no shaft play at all. And just an FYI...shaft play is the ability to wiggle the compressor wheel from side to side.

Lol I appreciate the response. There is minimal shaft play side to side and none in and out.
So the billowing white smoke when I cold start the engine is not related?
