lend an ear (t-case)

basically i want to make sure my whining is normal, heres the breakdown. 1st gear sounds straight cut like evos normally do, faint low whine in 2nd maybe even 3rd going at low speeds im taking 20-30mph at like 2000rpms it might even be my act 6 puck heres the videos, you dont hear it when accerating fast. first vid skip to 00:18. i never really drive fast so i hear the low speed stuff and it makes me worry sometimes.

it will get louder as the rpms increase and in all gears usually. Others can correct me if im wrong but a bad Tcase will also whine even in neutral.

Yes i believe it does make the noise in neutral if the t-case is bad, when i put mine in neutral the car seems to be quieter, maybe bc my clutch is disengaged? Who knows

Sounds like death whine... Mine is doing it too. So far about 3,000 miles like that. If you drive with the windows down and the stereo on high volume you'll forget about it.

So far I'm gonna ride till it dies. No launches for me though.

That's not the t-case. The deathwhine sounds like a firetruck siren and progessively changes pitch the faster you go. I do think that first gear whine is louder than normal though unless its just the mic on your camera.

I just had the death whine at a track day last year. One thing is that it will be progressive, and it will be heard in neutral too. remember that the TCase is spinning while you are rolling even out of gear.

make sure fluids are topped off, or just change for new thicker fluid. Measure how much comes out and goes in. If you can modulate the sound by changing those fluids you will know its the TCase.

Yea its probably my iphone mic, damn things sensitive, but at least it emphasizes that theres only loud whine in 1st gearI

all fluids have 10k, i hear absolutely nothing in neutral a i hearing harmonic sounds from the clutch maybe?

Harmonic sounds from the clutch? I don't know about that. I haven't had any sounds from my ACT HDSS that I know about. I can tell you that when I bought my car I had sounds very similar to yours, and I didn't know anything about EVOs at the time. (I was a WRX guy). I took it to Mitsu and they put it on the lift, drove it, and let me stand underneath. The verdict was a bad end bearing in the trans. Bummer, the money I saved as salvage was looking to be gone, However, when I got home I read about how to do all the fluids, opened the trans, and like a pint came out. That's it. I filled it up with proper fluids and it ran fine for years, on track, (6sp), until I repeatedly over cooked it on track by essentially doing endurance racing with no cool down breaks. bye bye syncros. Clutch lockout + heat + abuse. Well, then it needed a rebuild.

My point is diligent fluid and some attention to car in the use of the trans and it should last the life of the car (especially in stock form).

I wouldn't worry about it. Its an evo thing, and could happen to any one you buy, new or used.

I wouldn't trust anyone else's comments about the fluids being new, old, full, or not. I would only do it myself and often. Cycling the fluids is the cheapest and most informative thing you can do troubleshooting the driveline. Change the fluids and measure how much comes out.

I believe a whine in just one gear, ilke first could indicate some kind of syncro or slider issue, but that would be a question for Shep, or the other trans gurus. In the vid its touch to tell. So, change the fluid and record again.
