Is something wrong with my turbo?

I drive a 05 GSR SSL and my turbo was working fine two days ago. Then all of a sudden last night my turbo started sounding different. More high pitched and like raspy, I tried to take a video but it didn't work to well. I'm fairly noobish and that's a pretty bad explanation but would anyone happen to have an idea for this? As well, it needs an oil change if that might be it?

Once I can get a hold of a better camera I will try to update the thread.

Take off the intake and check for shaft play is the first thing I'd do.

Thank you, what do I do after it's off though? What's the exact purpose of doing this?

Boost leak would be my guess.

+1.

once you take the intake pipe off you will be able to see the wheel in your turbo. try to move it up and down, side to side, in and out and that will tell you if you have shaft play. if its excessive you will need a rebuild or a new turbo..its probably just a boost leak though

To see if the bearing in the turbo is goin back and the blades possibly hit the side. I am with the other guys boost leak test it along with checking to see if there is any major damage done to the turbo. It is possible something may have gotten sucked in and touched a fin which that would make the turbo sound different. So there are some things you can look for hope you find out its one of the 3.

How does one do a boost leak test? That was my original guess but not really sure how you can check that...as well if it's just a leak how much am I expected to spend?
If it's just a boost leak, is the car still driveable? Even if I shift with lower rpm?

Raspy makes me think exhaust leak or the turbo is taking a dump if that is what making the noise.

Check for shaft play as stated above. It should move slightly from side to side, but not in and out. Do this gently. You do not need superman strength to check it.

If it is spinning freely and not touching the sides. With no shaft play then a boost leak test would be a good idea just to cover the bases.

Have you done or had any work done recently?

No work has been done, the car only has like 54k miles, and has only been our for two months so far this year, and I only drove it for two months last year as well. I really hate how I have no car knowledge..I feel so useless in this situation, as it's something I only started to look into.

yes take off the intake side of the turbo and put your fingers on the blade and push up down left and right and see if the wheel moves around or not. if it moves alot than thats def a sign of shaft play and bad turbo, but if its VERY minimal than you should be fine

Check all your piping from the turbo all the way to the intake manifold. Any smoke?

Very minimal shaft play, I also heard it could be the transfer case. There is no smoke coming from my evo as well. I took it to a mech to check it out and tbh...they only made it worse. It kind of sucks.
