Bad Lifter Still Pressurize?

So I am having a loud tapping noise coming from my valve train I'm 85% sure. I can only think it is a bad lifter. I pulled them and cleaned them according to Mitsubishi repair manual cleaning them in diesel and leaving them pressurized then reinstalling them. They all would stay solid when cleaning them if i removed the pin releasing the check valve in them. So I figured that was how you knew if they were good or not. Is there any way these can stay solid but still collapse while in the car?
