Clutch for a slightly moded DD!?

Hello Evo world!

let me pick the collective brain here. I recently picked up an WW 05 MR, well just this week the clutch started to slip around max torque, so ill be putting in a aftermarket unit ASAP.

Now my other Evo has a custom push style mini-twin in it, and as much as I loveeeeeee that set up, its just not needed for this car.

This car will split DD duty with my truck so it will see a decent amount of mileage.
the car wont be moded much, nothing past the 450-500wtq range (probably going to run a 2871 on this car, if i can stop myself from going bigger)

specifics-
I DO NOT care how stiff the pedal is. The more "firm" it is, the better IMO

must be a single disk, sprung hub. full face or 6puck preferred but Id do a 4puck if needed.

Id like to stick with the OE pull style set up as doing another push conversion, on the 6spd, is just another headache i dont want.

I will be using a lighter FW with this clutch, I prefer the ACT chrome-molly units but AL is acceptable.

now this in itself is nothing special but allot of the clutch reviews i can find are from 2009-2010 and Id like to think some of the high RPM lock out and TOB clip issues have been sorted out by now.

I wonder if running a OE pressure plate with an aftermarket disk (and possibly sling in a heaver wave spring on the PP) is the best idea here. If EVERY aftermarket clutch is still having TOB clip issues, while the OE continues to be perfect, then the aftermarket guys are just getting lazy. the clip retaining features on the OEM unit arnt anything special here folks......

i DO NOT want to rely on a fork stop. If you need to band-aid the system, it was not designed properly (i.e. pressure plate TOB clip retaining feature design).

so everyone, give me your information, opinions, experience, ect.
whats the best unit to buy these days??

THANKS!

I feel like we answer this question on the daily. Comp HD. Street disc at power level you said, but 6 puck sprung if you want a little moral support on the matter.

I just cant imagine people tolerating the chance of the TOB clip popping off when the OE set up had no such issues.

I've had no issues. No one that I know has had any issues with theirs. Almost every local Evo under 700whp is running this clutch now without issue.

dont go too aggressive especially since youre going to be DD, but don't go to weak if youre going to do heavy modding in the future

I have the Comp Twin and I'm considering the stage 2 HD that English Racing tested on their EVO. It's making 500+tq and having no issues with this clutch.

Ok, everyone talks about using multiple wave springs. and while im not a fan, it sounds like cheap insurance.

does any one have a pictures of there TOB with multiple wave springs on it? I just cant picture in my head how to make it work.

don't buy aluminum flywheel, you're just asking for trouble. the stock one is lightweight already. or better yet pick up the exedy race one. I have it and love it, plus its 2 pounds lighter and chromoly. also, for a lightly modded evo, pick up the exedy stage one. it's slightly heavier than stock, but grips like crazy.

i recently went with the competition clutch hd stage 2 setup. Heavy duty pressure plate with a sprung style street disc. Costed me 350 shipped and another 40 bucks to resurface the stock flywheel and another 80 or so in amsoil lube. I get a little chatter when i try and slip it too much during daily driving but all in all it holds great for dd and a little fun as well with e85 bolt on power as well. Put it in yourself and you get an affordable set up for around 500 bucks Dont spend some outrageous amount on some super duper grip force 2000 twin setup that is probably just a little overkill in most evo owners cars anyhow.

http://www.shopenglishracing.com/Evo...lutch-Kit.html Comp HD

That's what I ended up going with for my LR2.4 build instead of a twin. Would be great for your DD too.

I think im set on the clutch now, i like the comp stg4 6-puck sprung unit. But Im still lost on how what the hell people are talking about with adding multiple wave springs to the retaining clip.

does any one have a picture?
