03 Evo GSR "notchy" tranny

Hey everyone,

Within the last 3k miles I had a full fluid change done.
AMSOil was put in the tranny which I hear is the best however somewhat thin of a gear oil.
After driving around for 30+ minutes I now get a nice crunch going from 5th > 4th gear
and occasionally going up into 3rd.

I was looking to swap this gear oil out as I did not get this crunch before.
I'm also considering the possibility that my synchros may be going.
There's only 63k miles on the car total.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

couple of things you can do (in no particular order):

adjust clutch
get a heavy weight shift knob
shifter bushings/base bushings
change fluid
SS clutch line

To my knowledge my clutch adjustment is fine (releases about 3/4 high). And I wouldn't expect to have bushing wear at only 63k miles.
I could use a heavy shift knob to just blast through the crunch but I still have the concern of causing damage to my gears.

Any suggestion of the fluid besides AMSOil? Maybe something thicker?

The purpose of switching out the shifter and base bushing is not because of wear. It's to improve shifting response with better quality bushings.

Okay, that'd be a nice cheap fix however would it help to eliminate a crunchy downshift? I guess I'm unsure if it will actually change the position of moving parts to make the car shift more smoothly.

Thanks.
It's not the best, there is no "best". Though their f***tarded company will try to tell you different. It's their MO

You can try the Redline cocktail or OEM Diaqueen.

From there I'm with everyone else. Underhood, shifter base bushings, and a weighted knob.

Mitsubishi's manual specifies OEM fluids(what company doesnt) or equivalent. I use Castrol syntrax on the tranny and Royal Purple on the t-case and diff and it works perfect, once the tranny its nice and warm it shifts perfect. But i do have underhood bushings and a taller shift knob.

It looks like bushings and a shift knob it is first then. Fluid change after that if it doesn't fix the problem.

that should make a good difference. Look into Flossy knobs. I just got one that is 545grams and that thing is a beast (1.2lbs)

they call it "grip tape" and it's a powder coat almost similar to bedliner material but I think it's supposed to be similar to grip tape on skateboards and stuff. Feels very nice and doesn't slip out of your hand (not that my AMS one ever did)

Hey OP - any updates on your end? I'm having the same exact experience. I decided to go with AMSOil everything and I'm now getting some gear grind going from 4-5 which I never had before & car only has 30K miles.

I picked up Torque shifter bushings both cabin & under hood which I'm installing this weekend but I'm considering just flushing this stuff out and trying Royal Purple or OEM for the Tranny.

Stop running AMSoil and switch to Redline or Diaqueen. I wouldn't run Royal Purple either. I live in Colorado so i run Diaqueen because in the winter the Redline is notchy until the tranny warms up.
