Hard vibration in only 5th gear?!?! Suggestions?
Guys I just had the tranny swapped out my last tranny had no reverse now everything is great but I noticed only in 5th gear and only from 2k rpms- 3k rpms I get a hard vibration, and when I take my food off the gas between those rpms it goes away, anyone ever have/had this? If so what's the issue? The new tranny has 87k on it with no other problems and was out of a 04 evo
I own an '03 with the same problem. My car started doing this at 15K - it is now at 81K. When my clutch goes I'm sending in the tranny for a rebuild. I've read that fifth gear gets loose so I expect to need that and maybe an input shaft.
Maybe someone who had gone this route can advise.

Sounds like you are throwing the dreaded P0300. Luckily there is an easy fix if that is the problem. Also it doesn't do any damage, it is just very annoying when it happens.
Search P0300 disable test.
Any decent tuner or you, if you have a taxtric cable, can turn off the code. If that is the problem, it will not come back.

So, does every Evo 8 or 9 in the country vibrate at 60 mph in 5th? If yes, then this is normal. However, my car didn't do it when new. Something has changed. Plus, from what I've read here, only the early cars imported to this country develop this problem.
I first encountered this when I swapped out the tread-less OEM tire or something less pricey. Now, I am on star specs and the vibration seems much reduced. I could speculate on what this means, I have a theory (read guess) but, anyway, I refuse to believe any car should shake unless the rpm is so low the engine is about to stall.
scrivs posted. "I had the exact same issue, ended up needing a new 1st, 5th gears and input shaft..." That's all he writes but I assume this fixed his problem. Notice that he drives an Evo 8.

I take it you haven't seen the mileage threads were owners are lumbering around town in 5th.

Yup, completely fixed my 5th gear vibration problem. Smooth as silk now
The first USDM cars had loosely fitted drive train parts. Evidence of this include:
1. Early failure of transfer case ring and pinion gears
2. P0300 code
3. Vibration in 5th gear (a vibration which can be cured by refitting the OEM tire)
4. The fact that later cars no longer suffered from the P0300 problem but parts are interchangeable.
5. Refitting the transmission cures the 5th gear vibration according to scrivs.
6. Strengthening of the transmission or transfer case at the major shops doing this work mostly involves proper shimming.
