Toulene and Xylene?
Here in Nevada we have the same problem that you evo owners in cali are having. 91 octane is the best pump gas you can get around here and its about 1.70 per gallon. You can buy race gas at some places but its outrageously expensive. I was thinking about just adding a gallon of one of these products to my tank to get a ratio between 93-94 octane. Are these things safe to put in your evo? Do any of you use these either of these? some would be nice!!
thank you

huhu. 1.70! I paid $2.09 for 91 today! Good thing I was filling up the old Mini and not the Evo! The Mini only holds 5 gallons.
There are a bunch of threads in here regarding toluene and xylene. But the concensus is that, if used in moderation, it's a good safe way to add octane.

Toluene is a leading component in gasoline. It has a high octane rating, and was used in 84% concentration in the old turbo McLaren Honda F1 car that produced 1000hp/L.
The only downside to toluene addition is poor cold performance (F1 cars heated the fuel to 70C first).
ferb!

Mitsuorder:
Here ya go:
Take the octane rating of the gas you're pumping (eg. 91 octane) and multiply it by the number of gallons pumped, giving the total octane from pump gas. Take the toluene octane (114) or the xylene octane (117) and multiply it by the number of gallons your going to add, giving you the boost octane number. Add octane pump gas total to boost octane total and divivde by total number of gallons, gives you the new octane rating per gallon.
e.g. ((11 gallons of 91 pump gas = 1001) + (1 gallon of xylene = 117)) / 12 = 93.16 octane.
Hope this helps,
- Nellie

I've used toluene (octane 114) and xylene (octane 117) since I got my evo. works great and makes a noticeable difference. much smoother pull to redline. gasoline companies actually use toluene to increase the octane of gas. I get mine at Sherman Williams (paint store). Its used as a solvent. Problem is that drug dealers use toluene in their crack labs and so federal regulaters watch out for purchases in large quantities. the sherman william's guys made me open an account with them (name, address, driver's license # etc) in case the feds start sniffing around. Totally unnecessary in my opinion since I only buy 5-7 gallons per month, but I guess it covers their butts. Opening the account with them also gets me a 20% discount with each purchase so it works out well for them and me.
