Difference between off the shelf and "drop in" pistons

I am going to be doing a drop in build, I'm at a power level where I cringe every time I go WOT.

I was doing some research on pistons and drop in builds, and saw a few posts with people mentioning there is a difference between an off the shelf piston and a "drop in" piston. I started scratching my head.

If the piston is designed for an 85mm bore, and the factory bore is 85mm what difference can there possibly be? Still scratching my head...

Looking to either learn something or prove those posts are false.

I want to use the CP 10.5:1 pistons.

Drop-in means that you just put the parts on without doing any additional work to the motor. Drop-in builds work the best on very new motors and not the typical higher mileage motor.

Several members get custom pistons for builds such as a long rod motor and moves the pin closer to the top of piston than it typically would from their standard piston.

I understand the concept, I have built quite a few motors.

My question is: are there any differences between the standard off the shelf piston and lets say a Buschur piston specifically designed for drop in builds. Like what are the differences if any and why?

Before you do anything purchasing. You should measure the block your planning to use. Even with the drop-ins the cylinders should still be honed.

There shouldn't be much of a difference between an off the shelf and a drop in. Either way you will be file fitting rings.

That's what I figured. I must have misunderstood the post because there should be no difference at all..
