Clutch or T-Case chatter/rattle?
Clutch or T-Case chatter/rattle?
Evo 8 with 143k miles. Just bought the car last week. Drove it back 500+ miles. I check the t-case fluid, pull the drain plug and nothing came out. When I drive the car it only makes that chatter/rattle when in decel. Some times it'll make that noise while driving. But for the most part it does it during decel.
I put diaqueen in the t-case (after I discovered it was bare empty), it does not whine as much as it did. The car drives perfectly fine. 22 lbs of boost and runs great. Its just that sound seems like something is going to break.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I personally would quit driving it and start checking all driveline fluids. It could be your transmission as well. Whatever it is though, it doesn't sound good. Change all fluids and start checking for metal shavings.
No fluid? Check for leaks after fill up. What clutch do you have? Unsprung clutch disks will transfer engine harmonics through drive train which is heard during deaccelertion. Solid or stiffer rear diff bushings will amplify the noise.
@mathro - the t-case had medal shavings from when i did put fluids in and let the extra come out.
Im going to change the t-case. My buddy has a bunch of evos and i talked to him last night and he had the same sound and issue with one and it was the t-case. But during the process of pulling the t-case ill check all the things u guys said to check. Thx and any helpful info ill have ill make sure ill post for people that are having the same problems.

Sounds good. Hope everything gets fixed without it being too much work or money on your part. I would definitely go over that car with a fine tooth comb though. With that many miles and the T-case pretty much blown after 500 miles, who know what else the previous owner/owners may have neglected. Good luck!
