EVO 9 MR - is low mileage a good thing?
Hey Evom,
I have experience with the evo x and loving every minute of it! However I perform all maintanace on time and average 16,000 miles a year. No major or minor problems thus far.
I found this 2006 Evo 9 MR 6speed manual with 60k, this vehicle averaged about 8500 a year. I am very interested in adding it to my collection, however my father warned me that sometimes, when a vehicle is older, with low miles on it, it can potentially be worse because the seals of the engine will dry up, if not used routinely enough.
Can you guys help answer this for me? thank you!
Oh yeah, this is what it looks like! Found a bone stock one!

Who cares if seals are slightly dried up.... they can be replaced. If you think your gonna find a car that nothing is ever going to go wrong with your crazy. If its in good shape, well maintained, clean, stock and of course you want it.... buy it and if anything does happen just fix it and continue on with life and enjoying the car!
I have an 06 evo se with only 37600. I have owed it for 3half years now. So I think you will be fine with the car having 60,000. Just make sure the 60,000 mile service was done or you might want to think about getting it done.

8500 miles a year isn't low lol. At least for me anyway. I've had my car 3 years now and I've only put about that on it. I have a 97 ford escort that I drive most days. As long as the previous owner took care of it and did all the required services you shouldn't worry too much.
Low mileage means nothing unfortunately. While really high mileage of course can be a deterrent, mileage is too easy to skew on these cars as well as totally irrelevant to the type of driving it has experienced. What good is a 50k car if it did another 50k on the track with the meter removed?
Funny side note, I had a dude bring an IX into the shop about a year ago to be checked out, do basic fluid intervals etc. Guy was ecstatic he got this car with 16k miles on it, paid I think he said $21-22k. Cosmetic condition was great, had several hop up parts as far as he knew, plus it still had over a year of warranty left due to a late sale date. Stellar right?
When I opened the hood (never mind the AMS intake and rail, tubular header and non-stock mount turbo etc)...... it had an VIII cylinder head on it.
...And 5 speed tranny (was a 6 speed chassis).
It "only had 16k miles" though :P
No telling what all happened to that car, how many miles were on the parts swapped in, etc.
Look the car over well and if possible take it to someone trusted that works on them for a living. That will give you a much better indication of the condition of the vehicle than just a number.

Your father is old school bro... The only seal i have had harden on me was my valve cover gasket... The oil pan cooler lines front case head and all that are paper or metal... Which dont tend to "dry up"...
Ps my 06 ix mr has 50,010 miles...

it may seem a little ridiculous, but that is the going price for an Evo 9 here in Southern California. I wouldnt be surprised if it was like this across the states.
Its all about supply and demand. Being that there was only one year of the Evo 9 with i think approx 5-6k units made and then take into consideration how many of our cars are stolen and stripped, damaged beyond repair, shipped overseas etc etc, then you have yourself a situation where if someone wants this car, they arent gonna let it go for cheap.
here's a link to give you an idea:

heck, SCM (South Coast Mitsu) has a red evo 9 with 72k on it , bone stock going for 29,900!
there is one going for 16k but thats because its a salvage title.
KBB gives my car with 66k on the clock a private party value of 20,900
i wonder how that would even work? wouldnt you have to swap out ecu's as well due to the MIVEC and on top of that plug the hole in the block that supplies oil to the MIVEC solenoid?
I'm guessing they swapped everything (block and electrical) back to VIII specs... like the reverse of people that do IX swaps. I only specify the head as that was how I identified the difference. Not sure the reasoning unless they had something in mind that mivec interfered with, or someone bought the drivetrain as a drop in performance package.
I'll tell you it must have been stupid fast. When I did my test drive I just took off like normal and **** got real, fast. I can only imagine what it did when you hot-rodded it.
