Grrr you've gotta be kidding me! I just checked his site and see two new options for the rear diff, the spool and the HD pinion spacer. I just got my diff built from Jon a couple of months ago and went all out with the upgraded side cover sight glass etc. Now he has some new options...Im so upset haha

Anyway, to answer your question or to give my .02 I dont think you will get much input on here yet bc the spool upgrade is quite new. I honestly dont even know what it is or what it does but I'm sure if Jon came out with it, it serves a purpose other than to sound cool.

Have you spoken with him on the phone about it? I will give him a call tomorrow to find out some more info and report back assuming nobody else chimes in beforehand.

A spool will make both rear axles spin together at the same time all the time. Not good for a street car.

ive spoke with jon today,he recommended the 12 max lock plate over the spool due to the harshness it puts the axels and drive train during a turn. i planned on upgrading the rear axels 36 spline with the spool setup.

heel2toe locker will be engaged once theres a slip. spool is all the time.

i'd jus like a second input of someone with expericnce of a spool on an evo or awd platform. on RWD a spool is no question.

im leaning towards the spool only because i occasionally i get side ways (60ft) during a big $ race. i dont want to give a chance for a slip with the plates.

I run a welded center and rear diff in my Talon. It has without a doubt made my launching more consistent as well as keeps my drive line parts in one piece. It is very difficult to turn. The car loads up and makes the tires skip on the pavement.

A locking type(1.5 or 2 way) will lock when the diff notices load in 1 direction(forward and in 1.5) or both decel and acceleration(2 way). A LSD clutch type uses clutches to limit slip between either side of the diff.

Regardless the Spool is lighter, bullet proof, and is designed for drag cars. I would not recommend for a street car.

I paid a just under $1000 for the TRE 12 plate max lock + new basket (my axles wouldnt go in since I hit a wall at 65mph and tweaked the load) + ninja hd side cover + rear sight glass. I bought this package roughly 4 months ago and I didnt have the spool option back then or else i would have got it because 95% of the racing I do is drag.

I am happy with my rear diff as it is, the car launches like a beast with the 350whp I have currently and AWD spec D2 coilovers set to the right settings...SECRET lol.

I asked for a "fully built rear diff" and I got just that, Jon knws his **** and his product shows!

Factory axles and I have never broken anything with the welded.

I had Jon @ TRE setup up my diff when I swapped over to an Auto(3.31 vs 3.54). Did an amazing job like always. It helps that TRE is like 10 minutes or so from my shop so its a no brainer to go there. He also did my 5 speed trans way back(5 years ago) and it went from my mid 10 sec car to my brothers 500hp 2g and have never had issues with it.
