early mitsubishi 3000gt rear diff on a evo 8 help

Hi guys, just wondering if anybody as ever fitted the earlier 91-93 rear diff off a twin turbo 3000gt to a evo? Its the smaller of the rear diffs that came on the 3000gt, its more of a rs sized diff and is a lsd diff with the same ratio as on a evo 8. Basically I want to know if it would be up to the job of drag racing like the rs rear diff is as I have one lying around, bearing in mind my car as in excess of 800bhp on pump fuel. Any help would be good thanks dave

It's been done before. If memory serves, that's the rear end that AMS ran on their drag evo.

I am pretty sure the early 3SI isnt any better than the stock Evo. We have the late model 3.307 GTO diff in one of our drag cars...works good.

Thanks johnbradley, you wouldnt happen to jnow where I could get a crown wheel and pinion in 3.307 ratio would you? As I have the casing and lsd already. Also need to get the hangers made to make it fit my evo 8

Here is the part number for the Z15 rear diff - MB185450

The Z16 which is what I presume you have right now is the same for the 3.307, so either way it has either of your diffs covered.

Thanks johnbradley, so what your saying is I can use the crown wheel and pinion out of the smaller diff to fit it in the bigger diff? The big diff I have which is the same casing as the ams one but its a 3.545 ratio, the little diff I have the ratio on that is 3.307 but obviously no good for drag. If your saying I can use the crown wheel and pinion out of the smaller diff to fit in the big diff then im almost home and dry :-)

Correct, the same part number is listed for all years of rear diff.

You are a star johnbradley ;-) thanks. Any idea where I could get the hangers made to fit it to my evo 8? Or where I could buy them from?

Hi john, just took the covers off the diffs, the big diff the crown wheel is bolted to the diff with 10 bolts but the little diff the crown wheel is only bolted on by 8 bolts, so I think they might be different :-(
