fp turbo install smoke

Okay, so today I installed the FP turbo I got from a member on this board about eight-ish months ago. The turbo had just sat in the garage on a shelf waiting for me to get up and do it. Well, yesterday was the day I started and I took the plug wires off today, primed the turbo with oil, cranked it up and all went well. I went for a drive and all went well... But then I warmed it up a bit more and when it is coasting down a long hill or to a stop at smokes. When I am going through town just driving and in vacuum, I am fine, when I am in boost, no smoke, but when I coast I get smoke... A bit honestly. So does that mean seal issues? Did I ruin the turbo by letting it sit? Should I just go with the flow and see if it gets better as oil goes through it? IDK. I don't want to pull this thing back out.. Blah. For the record... The shaft play is minimal at best.

Might be from install, if any oil got on it during install then as it heats up it will cook off that oil n smoke a bit. When I installed my engine I had a leak in my move cline that got a good bit of oil on my dp n that smoked for almost 1000 miles before it finally cooked all off. Would run it till it starts smoking then take a look and see if you can see where it's leaking from.

I would liberally spray Kroil penetrating oil on my exhaust bolts when removing the manifold and turbo. Once I put it all back together it'll smoke for a while, even if it sits for months. Once you heat it up it smokes like mad. Check your coolant and oil lines for any leaks. If the smoke is only coming off the surface you're probably good and it will burn off.

The smoke only comes out when I am off the throttle coasting. Not while in boost and not when normally driving. The smoke is white looking in color from the mirror. I was under the impression it was just oil I spilled in the turbo too but now I'm not so sure....

From the mirror? I was under the assumption it was from under the hood not the tail pipe.

Yeah me too if it's just the tailpipe then that's def not what I was suggesting. Could be turbo seals or the valve stem seals. Reason other guy was asking about color is if the smoke has a bluish tint to it it's burning oil, straight white is usually coolant/condensation burning, you might try dropping downpipe off the o2 and look inside both to see if there is any oil or coolant inside.

Well, I know it isn't coolant because I can smell it and it is oil burning. I have a small tick IDK if it would be valves because it started doing it after turbo install but how can I see if the valve seals are bad?

Hello,

I have a few questions...

1) What model turbo? Is it ball-bearing or journal-bearing?

2) Do you have blue smoke coming out of your exhaust?

3) Did you check the turbo's compressor wheel for shaft play (if you grab the compressor wheel with the intake off and try and move it around, does it a move)?

4) Is there oil in and around the compressor or exhaust housings at all?

5) How is the turbo being fed oil (head or oil filter housing)?

6) Are all the oil connections tight and torqued to spec?

7) What kind of oil are you currently running?

Depending on your responses, we will be better able to figure out your issue.

Sounds like its leaking oil. Check your dipstick first. Maybe you are really low. My DSM would tick bad when it was low. Double check turbo oil inlet. Lastly, drop your downpipe, as someone suggested, and look for oil. I think its a combo of a few things. Mainly dried out turbo seals and possibly leaking at the turbo oil inlet.

I wouldnt just jump to conclusion that its just the seals. When my DSM turbo seals let go, it was MASSIVE smoke. Covered the entire road type. Giving it gas would increase smoke. Oil was nearly dripping out the exhaust tailpipe. Combination of blue and white smoke.

FP green journal bearing

2) Do you have blue smoke coming out of your exhaust?
Yes I do

3) Did you check the turbo's compressor wheel for shaft play (if you grab the compressor wheel with the intake off and try and move it around, does it a move)?
Turbo has very very minimal shaft play at best

4) Is there oil in and around the compressor or exhaust housings at all?
I have not checked since install a day ago (50 miles max)

5) How is the turbo being fed oil (head or oil filter housing)?
FP oil filter housing fed

6) Are all the oil connections tight and torqued to spec?
No oil leaking to ground all connections were torqued with all new lines and hardware

7) What kind of oil are you currently running?
Rotella t6 synthetic

And I think tick is exhaust leak. Oil levels are fine

smoke on decel is most likely a seal issues in the turbo. probably from sitting around and the seal just dried up. plus synthetic on a dried up seal is usually a bad thing cause synthetic won't let the seal swell like it would with conventional oil. same thing happens all the time with jdm engines that sit for a while

Before you do anything else, clean out the PCV vavle. Try that and report back.
