Noob EVO owner with questions!
Hey everyone! So I`ve wanted an EVO for years...and as of yesterday I finally got one! It was fully built by FFTec in Hayward, CA. The recent owner built it into quite frankly a complete beast.
As far as being streetable, I feel that it needs milder cams and a milder tune. Is anyone familiar with the GSC S3 cams from FFtec? If so, and you have any suggestions for a milder set of cams to where at idle it`s not clanking like a fully blown 1000hp rat rod that`d be great haha. If you have milder cams for an EVO 9 I`d even be interested in trading these HIGH performance cams of mine also. Love all the crazy power, but I need it toned down a bit lol.
My goal is milder cams and a slightly milder tune, so that it`s MUCH more streetable and I dont have to worry about the motor dying due to the engine braking and crazy cams.
Any help and suggestions would be great thanks you guys!

i love my S2's and they are fine on the street.
What motor is it? And what turbo? swapping out the cams will help but if there is a massive turbo on the car you should think of getting a smaller turbo so it is more streetable or turning down the boost.

Nice to see you on here Ru. The cam lope,as you describe it, is a normal part of owning an Evo with larger trim cams. Just because your cams lope doesn't mean that your engine is close to failure.
Your Evo was built for a specific purpose and if I was you I would work closely with the people that built it. They can help put you on the correct path to de-tuning your Evo.
FYI, GSC S3 cams are not made by FFtec. They are made by GSC power division. http://www.power-division.com/home.php?cat=271
IIRC, the cams don't need to be changed to get rid of the lope. That can be done through ECU tuning. They can also limit other factors and de-tune the vehicle through ECU tuning to make it more street friendly.

The motor is a 2.4L Short block. As for the turbo, it is a Precision 6766 dual ceramic bearing turbo. It`s just that at idle at traffic lights and what not, it is incredibly loud and clanky. Not only that, but the idle loves to die down and stall, especially when I`m slowing down to a stop and its out of gear. Smaller turbo would give me better low to mid range power and be better for the streets yeah I agree.

Hey Neil! Thanks for finding me on here haha. I just hate how the motor wants to die everytime I`m slowing down. And also the fact that it`s just really loud at idle.....I need it quieter for sure or else I`m going to get pulled over. It sounds like a fully cammed V8 lol. I am in contact with the previous owner who built it though, and FFtec I`ll get in touch with on Monday. Btw, I know the cams are not made by FFtec, just that they were purchased there; sorry for the mis-wording.
So that "glug glug....glug glug.." at idle can be changed WITHOUT getting more mild cams??? So just simple ECU tuning can change that? That would be great!
Gratz rudas. I actually am in the same boat and just picked up my first Evo since I just graduated. I have an Evo 8 stroked to 2.4L and am running the GSC S2's and I don't mind them at all as far as street-ability, its just something that will take a week or so to get used to. This also may be a matter of opinion, but I think that tuning any car on E-85 makes it easier to drive. The pistons just feel like they bounce like butter and in all the cars I have got tuned, e-85 has made it feel that way. In all honesty, I would say the GSC s3's aren't what you want in a daily, they're for big power.
Personally I would get rid of the 6766 for a much more responsive turbo. If you were still on a 2.0L revving to the moon Id say keep the 6766. But a 2.4 on a stock frame turbo like the FP Black, plus E85 would be an amazing setup for a street car. 6766 has a lot of lag for a street car. Id leave that turbo for a drag only setup.

i have the same problem, car is tuned but wants to die when approaching a stop light or sign, i have to go gear by gear to a complete stop and also sometimes die if i cruise into a parking spot or reverse due to the cams.
definitely work with fftec and the original owner to better fit the car to your needs. see if maybe a re-tune or maybe swapping to speed density can help with the situation

Thanks for the input I appreciate it! Congrats on getting your first evo too
So you believe that if I downgrade the S3 cams I should be good to go? And I can have a consistent idle that wont stall? I hope so.

Roach85 yeah man, I think I have to agree with you on the turbo. As much as I love it, I might have to get something smaller and more responsive for the streets.

Rex thanks for the tips! I`m glad to see I`m not the only one with this issue. How is your evo set up? It seems we have the same exact issues honestly. Swapping to speed density is an interesting idea! I honestly just need milder cams so its a smoother sounding car so cops dont pull me over the second they see me lol. Also, I need my idle to be consistent so it doesn`t keep dying like it does
A DBB FP Green would be extremely responsive on your setup. It all boils down to how much power you are looking to make. But I would stick to a stock frame turbo from Forced Performance. Stock frame plus a 2.4LR would be the perfect street setup IMO.
