Brian has got himself a turbo! -FpEvoGreen- Need opinions!

Hi guys, I recently picked up a used fp turbo. It is an older model green. It is a journal bearing turbo and has a 5 blade compressor wheel. I am pretty pumped because it should be a nice step up from my evo 8 turbo. It has been ported by fp and the previous owner coated the hot side. It has 15k miles on it and has zero in and out shaft play with very very minimal side to side. I plan on picking up a kit(most likely from map) to get it installed.

I am wondering if anyone out there has experience with this exact turbo? I have heard it has a little better flow rate than a stock 9 turbo.

My car has the basics right now: Buschur 3in down pipe , buschur o2 housing, hi flow cat, ebay catback, injen intake with upper intercooler piping, oem evo ix mr bov, hallman pro boost controller, maybe an upgraded fuel pump(it is very loud) and that is really all. All those parts came on the car when I bought it.

ALSO: when i bought the car it came with an after market tubular turbo manifold already installed. On one of the receipts it says "forged performance manifold"??? I have done a bit of research and came up with zero on this manifold. It worries me a bit because I don't want to be bolting my nice new turbo up to a crap manifold and have something break off and hit my turbine wheel. It was purchased for over 600 dollars but this was from ebay sooooo??? this is the reason I went ahead and got an oem manifold but let me know if you guys have ever heard of this. I will try and get a good pic of it.

Hopefully I am not getting my hopes up but i have dreams of 400whp on 93oct haha the previous owner said he made 386whp on 93oct with it which I would also be very happy with. I would be happy with 350 even haha.

To do this I also plan on getting: gsc s1 cams, vrsf 3.5in intercooler, muse short route upper and lower intercooler piping(i already have a mini battery tray), muse o2 dump, fic 950cc (low z) injectors, walbro 255lph fuel pump(just to be safe), a buschur port job for the oem exhaust manifold i picked up and run a catless test pipe I picked up also.

I constructed that list by seeing what other people where doing and seeing what would work best for my needs. I think the 400 may be possible with this but maybe I'm just gassing myself up haha I drive the car everyday and will continue to after the car is tuned. So I would really like a nice torquey tune with a low boost threshold, but I don't really want to hurt my stock block at all. I just want her to be reliable and quick so I can beat up on the subarus around here

Lmk what you guys think. I have some time and need to save up a lot before I can make this happen, but I want to get some ideas flowing. Thanks for reading! - Brian

a quick google search...
http://www.forgedperformance.com/store/home.php?cat=405
if they spent 570.00 on the manifold its a keeper. if it was 125 I would question it.

Yeah i did come across that website in my travels. They have all full race, tomei, and ams manifolds on there which are right around 1000+ for the full race. Maybe they just stopped making them? Maybe its fake? I really don't know haha This is why I am confused. It was purchased 4 years ago so who knows. Thanks for the response tho!

In regards to the manifold situation I would ditch that tubular manifold and throw the ported stocker back on there, but that's my opinion. Also are you looking to hit your hp goals on pump gas or E85?!

Thats what I was thinking. Just emailed the company for info ill keep you guys posted!
I would love to run e85 but there is virtually none in new jersey. We do get 93 octane tho so ill be running that. Thanks!

I would leave the manifold on there, just check it out to see if there are any cracks in the welds. Also, I would get the following:
1. Fuel pump re-wire kit
2. E85 if possible

Also is your FP Green the "OG Green" old school green like 68HTA or do you have the 73HTA version? Looking at the blade design I think you have the old school OG Green which is still an upgrade over the 8 turbo for sure.

In the end who really cares about a HP number? Most of these dude's numbers are inflated anyways compared to a mustang dyno. What really counts is the numbers you lay down at the track and also the "Butt Dyno", where your car feels fast to you which is ultimately what you should care about IMO

He will. Friends at 403 with a BB green and 93. Don't know much about supporting mods but I know he doesn't have cams. Just MIVEC.

Yeah that's mainly what I am concerned with too. I just want it to be nice and smooth and run well. But I was just seeing how much power you guys think that set up is capable of. I'll have to check the manifold out for myself I guess like you said. I believe map makes a full kit for the fuel system maybe I should look at that. And noooo e85 in jersey which really blows. As for the turbo it's a regular evo 9 oem compressor housing which I believe is the 68. No hta here unfortunately. I believe it's the original green but I can't wait to get it in either way lol gona be awesome!

You may wanna try and pick up a FP 84mm compressor cover so you don't have to deal with any surging issues.

I have the HTA 71 turbo without the 84mm compressor housing and I have no surge so far, but the 84mm compressor housing sounds cool like jet engine spooling up!

That all depends on whether or not you suffer from compressor surge. Some people's setup's do while others don't. In my experience working on and driving Evo's on the street and at the track an anti-surge compressor housing is never a bad thing.

I gotcha I gotcha. So is it a pain to replace a compressor housing? Is it something I could trust myself with? And I guess the 84mm housing would fit on my turbo even if it is an older green. Prob stupid question but I'm just trying to make sure lol
