I believe the main problem with the 6 speeds is that there just isn't enough room in the t-case for 6 gears and an adequate amount of oil. Having your tranny rebuilt by shepard or tre and adding an oil cooler should help a ton. Theres really no need to swap in a 5 speed unless your car is making well over 400whp and driven hard often.

well I have been using ams oil in with a stock Mitsubishi oil cooler .. never had problems.. I guess regular servcing wil make things better. if I had extra money on the side I will make shepherd build a 6 speed gear box stronger for me...

Sure, but it's hard to find a good stock one with low miles that hasn't been destroyed. That's why I don't wanna let mine go. I had an 8, and I don't want the 10.

Yes if you plan on doing those kinds of numbers you will definitely need the 5 speed gearbox.

From my experience this is not true. Excessive heat from lapping the car in 4th gear is the problem, not street driving.

that may be part of the problem. everything i've ever read says to use OEM fluids ONLY in the 6spd. i have 125k on mine and no issues (knock on wood). i autox and do HPDE/GTA events. so far, so good.

correct. the 6spd has .5qt less fluid. i'm looking into making a trans cooler. i'm at 350whp on pump and a bit under 450whp on e85.

the oil cooler doesn't help out transmissions. that's for engine oil only.
