A friend of mine has an Evo 6 with traces of oil in the coolant overflow bottle and radiator..

any idea what could cause this?

- has he blown a gasket or something?

Hmm he wouldn't happen to be running Redline water wetter? Either that or a blown headgasket is the worst case scenario.

 

Jemm, thats usually a sign of impending doom. It could be a million things really. Blown headgasket is the most logical. Does any oil spray out in the engine compartment at all? are you guys sure its engine oil? and how is the car running? Does he have a boost gauge, if so see if it is reading what it always has. My guess would be same as stated above, headgasket, but could as severe as a cracked block (but HIGHLY doubt it). anyway see if you can get any more info

 

Tell him to run a compression check

I have not seen the oil in the system firsthand as yet. However I was behind the car when it was overtaking 3 others @ WOT and noticed nothing strange coming from the exhaust. He boosts to 20psi. The car is not modded.

I will let you all know what happens!

I stopped using Redline water wetter a long time ago because of this. I have no idea why Redline water wetter does this, maybe it eventually breaks down??? But all my friends who have used Redline water wetter had this eventually happen to them. After we flushed the system and replaced it with just coolant/water, none of that oil-looking like substance ever showed up in the coolant.

 

damn, and I thought I was doing the coolant system some good, well good to know others have had this happen, images of blown head gaskets were dancing in my dreams when I saw oily stuff in my coolant resevoir, is the wetter doing any damage I wonder?

I was checking the coolant level in the Evo and noticed what looked like oil in the overflow bottle.

I did a search on here and found a few others had the same thing.

Apparently is is not oil, but has something to do with the way Water Wetter breaks down. I have had the Water Wetter in the car for about 9 months.

Why does it end up looking like this? It scared the **** out of me.

 

Any ideas from anyone?

 

The only thing I can offer is that I used WW in my Race bike, without coolant, and it was changed monthly. Perhaps there is a lifespan that has been exceeded here, but I can't be certain. What is the purpose of running WW with coolant? I used it primarily because of the lubricants in it that were missing by running no antifreeze. Antifreeze+race track=big no no, so WW was the next best thing.
