They have dog-boxes and can get different gearsets...

No they don't. They have cogs that slam into place (I know it's simplified for all the f'in rocket scientists that want to criticize every post). It is more important to match engine speed with road speed for good shifts, but the shifts are very positive and the transmission is very strong.
