Cool GSC S1 IX Cams with the FP Green

I searched the forums and could not find much info on this combo. I have a Evo 9. I am changing my setup to a FP green HTA and am looking for the best cams to go with this turbo for a street car. I would assume that the low end spool would be better on the S1s vs the S2s, but it seems like a lot of guys run the S2s. I already have a set of S1s and wondering how much top end hp I'd be giving up and if it's worth the extra cost to buy the S2s.

Theres no real answer to your question here. Your going to hear opinions from each side. Some people love their S2s, they are great cams. But the green is a much smaller turbo than most try to run, and IMHO the S1s have a much better powerband when dealing with the smaller turbos. But you seem to understand the difference between the cams, so the choice is yours.
S1s for better spool and a smoother powerband, or S2s to gain a few HP up top and sacrifice spool and shift the powerband higher.

Can't confidently tell you how much power is to be had. I can say that I've seen alot of people on this forum with s1's say that they should've just went with s2's. Don't know if the slight spool advantage of the s1's will outweigh the power gain of the s2's, that's for you to decide. Just try to find some dyno graphs of each with a green.

Just stick with your S1's. They'll be perfect for that turbo. and you won't have to change the valve springs

Yeah most of the data I can find either applies to the Evo 8 or people who are running larger turbos and the S2s. I saw some posts from English Racing saying that there is minimum spool loss with the S2s and nothing but gains. I would think that with the MIVAC you could make adjestments with both cams to make them effective. Adjusting the map so that the S1s are more aggressive at high rpm and with the S2s adjusting the map for better spool. But not sure how much the MIVAC can do.

What are you planning to do with the car? My old work mate had the S1 and the original green combo and for daily driving and light HPDE the combo spooled well, was responsive and worked great.

At our recent dyno day, Lucas put down 501whp and backed it up with a 506. Obviously there are alot of little details that contribute to this fantastic amount of power on a stock IX turbo. It wasnt the only one that dyno'd that day that was on bigger cams and a smaller turbo.

Chris just had Cosworth M3s installed with springs and retainers and then a retune by us on the dyno. Here is the results:

You will notice that the car makes 350whp from 5700-7750 with a peak of 374@7000. The rest of his mod list is pretty basic bolt ons and the last time the car dyno'd on the same dyno in very similar conditions it put out 324. This was with the same amount of boost, the same dyno operators, air temps within 10*, humidity spot on, and the same tuning crew.

Simply put, stock turbo cars WILL NOT LOSE with big cams. I invite any with similar DYNO proven examples of this to post, as well any proof that these cars were a fluke.

As an interesting sidenote, Lucas and I have noticed that with a "standard" MIVEC map the car feels like it is switching to VTEC above 5k as the car really starts to come up on the lobe. The VIIIs dont really seem to have that same exact feel to me. Perhaps Master English can give his impressions on the VIII.

I mostly just drive it on the street and take it to the drag strip occasionally. I am leaning toward the S1 cams because I already have a set to install and I think they will work good with the Green. I don't think the top end power difference will be huge between the two cams...maybe 10hp? The S1 cams are rated up to 450hp. Are there any 500hp cars still running S1s?
