Best ways to avoid running lean?

how can I avoid running lean?
It happened twice already and I have had to re-build cause i melted a couple of my forged pistons.
and the both times it happened ,the car was running rich.
but I know that it just has to run lean for one second to detonate.
what devices/gadgets are there that are more precise than the air/fuel gauge?
I thought that would have been enough.
Would c-16 make any difference?

thanks!!

A few ways. First and formost, a wideband a/f monitor will be your tell tail gauge on whats goin on. A decent wideband will set you back about $800-1200 depending on what brand. I have a FJO and am very satisfied with it. Next, is when you mod do it a little at a time and dyno your car with a wideband to tune it for your mods and you'll never have a problem.

Wideband O2 prices have come way down. I have an Innovate Motorsports LM-1. It works great and is very easy to use. On a GP, it cost $400, including the sensor, an inductive pickup to datalog RPMs and the datalogging software. Over 2000 of them have been sold.

Hi, first of all, you mention an A/F gauge, are you using a wide band A/F meter? Secondly, If you were running fat already, I'd guess you ran lean under boost at full power, right?
If that's the case, an A/F display might not help you much. It might well be you are running out of fuel when you need it most ...... I don't know what kind of fuel control you are using or if you have already upgraded your fuel pump and your injectors. Also, you are driving an EVO 7, right? That too probably makes a difference in how to control the fuel compared to our EVO 8's
Sounds like you need to find out why you are running lean and at what point in order to find a solution. I'd be careful though, rebuilding motors is the hard way to learn...

I run a walbro 255lph fuel pump as well as upgraded injectors.
yeah I did run lean under full boost.
and all I have is my air fuel gauge.it's not a wideband meter.
Looks like I have to fork out the couple hundred dollars and buy a wideband meter.
you're right about the re-building...it is the hard way to learn!!

Wow man, sorry to hear about your problem with the fuel. Looks like you are trying to make serious power . I don't know about the details of your car, but you might be outstripping the upgraded fuel system you are using or your fuel management is not doing the job right.....
