HKS Exhaust question

I was just wondering has anyone had any problems with the HKS HiPower Exhaust melting the rear skirt on the evo? If so does that simple heat tape stuff placed on the bottom of the skirt take care of that problem?

Thanks

I don't have hi power but my brother does, ummm he installed his shield because it was making the corner all black and melting a little, shield sticks out a little bit now...so no problem!... If you willing to make your own shield let me know i might help because i got sample on my paper later.

If you get the HKS exhaust made for JDM EVO7 or 8 , you might experience staining and / or melting of the bumper. But if you get the HKS exhaust made specifically for the USDM EVO8, you wouldnt have this prob.

Yes, I melted the left inside part of the arch. I immedialtely wiped the melted plastic off the pipe before it hardened. Then I took an exacto razor knife and cut back a portion of the back part of the bumper and reshaped the arch in that area. You cannot tell it was cut back and the exhaust clears with plenty of room and has been fine since.

If you cut the bumper, do it when it's warm after a drive so you can cut it more easily. It will peel like a potato when the plastic is soft and warm.

93CivEJ1 and SinCity, how long did it take before it started to melt your bumpers?? I am assuming that it did it right after you put it on... the reason I ask is because so far I haven't had any problems, but do you guys think I should keep an eye out and make sure still even though it's been on for a month or two?

I am interested in this because I just installed the 30th on my car.

Is there a problem with the exhaust tip touching, or is it the rear edge of the muffler touching??

My tip seems to be nicely centered in the opening.

yeah mine is angled but it seems to sit in the middle of the opening... and i don't think it ever touches the bumper anywhere, but i'm not positive about that.

Okay, my theory is that when the car is cold, the bumper has enough clearance, but as you drive and heat things up, the bumper heats up and expands and it gets closer to the exhaust tip which is very hot. When I first installed it, it was fine for a couple days. By the third day, I spent time in a lot of traffic and it was warmer out and I smelled a burning smell. When I got home, sure enough, the bumper and tip melted together.

It's the left inside edge, not the right side which is strange since the tip angles to the right side. I know the exhaust is installed right and sits right in the middle and has little movement, but the transfer of heat to the bumper was enough to melt it.

If this has not happened to you yet, it may be you live in a colder climate and or are always moving to dissipate the heat. When summer comes, it may happen. Just be aware. I love the HKS exhaust and it sits perfectly, so it's not a design issue, it's the enourmous heat your exhaust gives off. Once you trim the bumper slightly to give more room, everything is fine.

Thanks SinCity, very helpful information.... I live in Columbia, SC and it gets really hot here in the summer so i will be on the look out... that is odd that it is on the left side though, but I think that you are right about it just being alot of heat coming off of it... thanks again

I just installed a 30th anniv cat-back along with a full set of kartboy polyurethane exhaust hangers and the inside corner of the bumper melted also. I'm going to have at it w/ my dremel to give the bumper more clearance w/ the exhaust tip. No biggie. The tip exit sits right in the center of the bumper cutout, which is exactly where I want it. As with any aftermarket parts, minor tweaking is necessary to make it work perfectly.
