Brian Crower Cams "Hate"

First, if the thread is in the wrong place, please move admins. Second, I've done my research and came up to a not so clear answers. So I just purchased a Brian Crower 280 (BC 0122) cams for my Evo 9 and I've done some comparisons between BC, HKS, Kelfords, and GSC. Why are Brian Crower so frowned upon? I wanted to see and understand why BC is bad besides their "oh they suck" or "they're cheap because they're not reliable." I've seen on some threads that people who has BC cams lasted them 50k or 70k or more. Thanks for anyone's input.

Personally have not witnessed any recent threads on BC cams

At this point in time, most (some) of us have circled around the GSC line of cams. Comparing prices, the BC's run approx $450 ish vs GSC's at $600ish (GSC's are billet vs cast)

The GSC S2's seem to be the popular spec (thats what i run)

Well, for one, they are not machined on-center, so you have to buy cam gears, and spend some time degreeing them to find true 0-0. That, and the 272s don't make much power compared to everything else that's out there.

Thank you for your input, MinusPrevious. That's kind of one of the reason why I made the thread. The forums and threads where I did my search and comparison with the BC cams are back in 2009-2012. No real recent comparisons. Just the whole "if you like wasting money go buy BC cams" and such. Honestly, I purchased my BC 280 for $200 w/ less than 10k miles on them so I thought it was a good deal. So does my tuner. I should've done more thorough research.

Thank yu for your input, RS200. I bought them used from another EVO 9 user. He claims that the car came with the BC 280 when he bought it from the previous owner so I'm assuming it's already degree and zeroed . He switched to a GSC R2 cam for personal preference.

I recall years ago they the BC Cams had issues breaking in Evos. But I've had a Kelford 272 cam break on me and that hasn't stopped me from running them. I actually have the Kelford High lift 276 cams in my car right now. Plus they are just a really old school cam. Like RS200 said a lot of the knew 272 cams are more aggressive then the 280 cams from years past. For $200 i don't feel thats a bad deal at all. The main thing is that its your car. If you are happy with them thats all that matters.

The previous owner sent me a video of his EVO 9 with the same cams on with start up and idle. It sounded nice, but not too choppy/lopey like I had expected. Hopefully my tuner can bring out that loud chop that I am looking for.

Thanks for the input, cficare68. That's what I've read on the other threads and forums. Honestly, if the BC 280 don't exceed my expectation, I'll just move on to the S2's like I had planned in the beginning. Like you said, $200 wasn't such a bad deal so I decided to get them.

Yeah the one perk of the older cams are a lot of them don't require upgrade springs and retainers as well. If you do end up going to the s2 then you are definitely going to wanna upgrade those if you have not already done so.

I think they get a lot of hate because of the possibility a few years ago that they could break (although it was the same as Cosworth and kelford at the time too )

Also they don't make as much power as other cams. Think of them as the USDM equal to HKS 272, HKS 280's big duration for not much power.

That's what I've heard about BCs. As for power, if it gives me 30-40 HP like my tuner said it should, I'm happy with that. But if not then at least I know I what to get and not get in the future.

Yeah that's what I've read, but I'm inquiring about the BC 280s since those are the ones I have and would like knowledge of. Not BC 272 276. Thanks for your input though.

I think those bc 280 are like HKS 280 very mild.

Even more mild than the bc 276 or S2 or kel 272
